Kohler SH255–SH270 oil rules and air-cleaner schedules

The cited Kohler SH255/SH265/SH270 manual specifies 0.60 L oil at the full level and a 0.030-inch plug gap. Its oil schedule depends on the oil used: the PRO10 W-50option differs from the ordinary five-hour first change and 100-hour oil interval. Identify the oil and air-cleaner type before marking service due.

The first oil change has a stated exception

Owner manual18 59021RevB says the initial five-hour change is not required with KOHLER PRO10 W-50full-synthetic oil. It authorizes a 300-hour oil option with that oil; alternative oils retain100-hour changes. Apply the annual and severe-use instructions in the actual schedule as well.

For an engine with 80 hours since a documented regular oil change, 20 hours remain before a 100-hour interval, unless calendar or severe-use requirements call for earlier service. A seller’s synthetic-oil description does not establish that the approved PRO oil was used.

Look at the filter housing before buying an element

Low profileElement cleaning100h/annually; replacement300h

The two schedules describe different hardware. A precleaner is not an oil filter, and the flat housing is not proof that a dual-element kit fits. Compare the engine’s complete model/specification with the parts diagram before ordering.

Plug replacement has its own clock

The manual places spark-plug replacement at 125 hours or annually, with the gap set at 0.030 inch. That task does not move to 300 hours when the oil option changes. Its valve-clearance and fuel-line entries specify dealer work.

Keep fuel fresh within the manual’s requirements and stop for fuel leakage or abnormal oil level. “No scheduled oil change” advice for a different brand or engine feature does not apply to this SH schedule.

Kohler Courage SH255, SH265 and SH270: oil capacity, plug gap and maintenance schedule

The Kohler Courage SH255, SH265 and SH270 are one 196 cubic centimeter engine that takes 0.63 US quart (0.60 liter) of oil at the full mark, with a spark plug gap of 0.030 inch. Kohler ties the oil-change interval to the oil: 300 hours on KOHLER PRO 10W-50 full synthetic, and 100 hours on any other oil. The plug is replaced every 125 hours or annually, the air cleaner element on a schedule that depends on which type is fitted, and E15, E20 and E85 fuels are not approved.

Before you service it

These Disconnect and ground the spark plug lead before any service. Kohler’s manual points to its service manual for further specifications.

The one engine here with a 300-hour oil interval, if you buy the right oil

The Kohler Courage SH255, SH265 and SH270 are the same 196 cubic centimeter engine, 12 cubic inches, with a 2.7 inch bore and a 2.1 inch stroke. They are fitted to walk-behind mowers and other equipment, and Kohler lists one set of figures for all three model numbers. What sets the Kohler manual apart is the oil rule: it ties the length of the oil-change interval to the oil you buy.

The oil rule that changes the schedule

Kohler describes its KOHLER PRO 10W-50 full-synthetic oil as an all-season oil that extends the oil change interval to 300 hours, and says that interval is exclusive to Kohler engines running that oil. Any other oil is allowed, but the change interval is 100 hours. For temperatures, the chart in the manual puts 5W-30 in the cold, 10W-30 through the middle of the range, and SAE 30 in heat.

With KOHLER PRO oil the first oil change after five hours is not required, and with any other oil it is.

Two air cleaners, one manual

The SH engines come with either a dual-element cleaner, a foam precleaner over a paper element, or a low-profile cleaner, and the schedule treats them differently. The precleaner is taken off the paper element, washed in warm water and refitted, while a low-profile element is cleaned at 100 hours and replaced at 300. Look at yours before you pick a line from the table.

Kohler Courage SH255, SH265 and SH270: questions

Does the Kohler SH265 need its valves adjusted?

Yes, on a schedule: check and adjust the valve clearance with the engine cold every 100 hours. Kohler marks it as a job for an authorized dealer, and the clearance values are in its service manual.

How much oil does a Kohler SH265 take?

0.63 US quart (0.60 liter) at the full level, the same for the SH255 and SH270. Kohler says never to run the engine with the oil below or above the operating range on the dipstick, so check by the dipstick.

What is the spark plug gap on a Kohler SH265?

0.030 inch (0.76 mm), from the engine specification table in Kohler’s owner’s manual. Kohler schedules the plug to be replaced every 125 hours or annually, with the gap set on the new plug.

How often should I change the oil in a Kohler SH265?

Every 100 hours or annually with ordinary oil, and every 300 hours with KOHLER PRO 10W-50 full-synthetic oil, which Kohler says is the only oil authorized for the 300-hour interval. Change the oil after the first 5 hours unless you use the PRO synthetic.

What oil viscosity should I use in a Kohler SH265?

API service class SJ or higher, chosen by air temperature. The chart in the manual points to 5W-30 in cold weather, 10W-30 across the middle of the range, and SAE 30 in heat, with KOHLER PRO 10W-50 as an all-season option.

Can I use E15 fuel in a Kohler SH265?

No. Kohler says E15, E20 and E85 are not approved. Gasoline with up to 10% ethyl alcohol is acceptable, and the fuel must be clean, fresh unleaded of 87 octane (R+M)/2 or higher.

Do not use gasoline older than 30 days.

What is the difference between the SH255, SH265 and SH270?

In Kohler’s manual, nothing in the specification table: they share one row with the same 196 cc displacement, oil capacity and spark plug gap. The model number reflects the application and equipment they are supplied for.

How often should the air cleaner be serviced on a Kohler SH265?

A dual-element cleaner has its precleaner serviced every 50 hours or annually, and the element replaced every 100 hours or annually. A low-profile element is cleaned every 100 hours or annually and replaced every 300 hours. Do more in dust.

What operating-angle limit applies to the Kohler SH265 engine?

The maximum angle of operation is 25 degrees. Beyond that, the engine can be damaged by insufficient lubrication, because the oil no longer reaches the parts that need it. Keep the oil at the right level, since a low sump makes it worse.

When should the Kohler fuel line be replaced?

Every 200 hours, and Kohler marks it as a job for an authorized dealer. A fuel filter, if fitted, is replaced every 100 hours or annually. Old, stale or contaminated fuel effects are not warrantable.

How do I store a Kohler SH265 for winter?

Kohler says if it will be out of service for 2 months or more, add Kohler PRO Series fuel treatment or run the fuel out, and change the oil while the engine is warm. Untreated fuel failures are not warrantable.

What is the Kohler SH265 spark plug part number?

Kohler part 14 132 03-S, gapped 0.030 inch. The same plug is listed for the SH255, SH265 and SH270, and Kohler sells it in maintenance kit 18 789 01-S with the air filter 18 083 04-S and the pre-cleaner 18 083 05-S.
