STIHL MS170–MS271 fuel, chain and service differences
For STIHL MS170–MS271 service, identify the exact saw and fitted cutting attachment. The manuals below specify50:1 fuel and a 0.5 mm plug gap, but bar grooves, chain gauges and filter kits differ. Check the actual bar stamp and model/serial before ordering; a shared pitch or plug gap does not prove interchangeable parts.
One fuel ratio does not make one cutting attachment
| Models | Fuel /chain-oil tank | Cutting-attachment distinction |
|---|---|---|
| MS170 /MS180 | 0.25 /0.145 L | 3/8 Picco; MS170 1.1 mm, MS180 manual also lists 1.3 mm |
| MS210 /MS230 /MS250 | 0.47 /0.20 L | Model-dependentPicco or.325options; match actual combination |
| MS271 /MS291 manual | 0.50 /0.24 L | Currentmanual lists different.325 gauge/bar combinations |
The currentMS271/MS291 manual lists both 1.3 mm and 1.6 mm chain families with their matching bars. The former page treated one 0.063-inch configuration as universal. A replacement bar can change what fits, so use its pitch, groove width and required drive-link count together.
For example, a 1.3 mm drive link is 0.2 mm thicker than a 1.1 mm bar groove’s nominal specification. That is a mismatch, not a reason to force a loop onto the bar. Matching gauge alone still leaves pitch and link count unresolved.
Fuel and bar oil remain separate service items
At 50:1, four liters of gasoline require 80 ml of the specified two-stroke oil. Mix in the approved container by the matching manual’s method.
Bar-and-chain oil goes in the separate oiler reservoir. Check chain lubrication and refill that reservoir as directed during refueling.
These international manuals include octane terminology that differs from US pump labeling. “90ROC” is not a 90AKIrequirement at a US pump. Select the correct market manual and its fuel specification; a different country’s number should not be copied without identifying the rating system.
Set the plug to the saw’s specification
The small-saw manual lists suppressed WSR6F/BPMR7A/ZKC14types; the MS210/230/250 manual specifies WSR6F, and the MS271 manual lists WSR6F/BPMR7A. All cited gap specifications are 0.5 mm. Fit the approved type and check the gap rather than relying on a boxed plug’s initial setting.
The manuals call for a new plug after about 100 operating hours, or sooner for badly eroded electrodes. A fouled plug can reflect mixture, intake or operating problems. Replacing it without correcting the cause can leave the same fault.
A kit’s serial restriction must stay with the right model
The official11410071800kit listing names MS271/MS291and MS311 with a serial-number condition above 295938526. That condition does not establish a universal change to 11410074100 for every saw above that number. Confirm the actual variant and current part with the dealer.
Use the STIHL kit lookup for filter/plug purchasing. For brake, clutch or carburetor faults, follow the complete saw manual and qualified-service requirements instead of a generic high-speed screw setting.
STIHL MS 170 and MS 180 chainsaws: fuel mix, spark plug, chain and maintenance chart
The STIHL MS 170 and MS 180 chainsaws run on a 1:50 mix of gasoline and STIHL two-stroke oil, which is 20 millilitres of oil per liter of gasoline, with a 0.25 liter fuel tank and a 0.145 liter chain oil tank. The plug is a Bosch WSR 6 F, NGK BPMR 7 A or STIHL ZK C 14 with a 0.5 millimeter gap, replaced after 100 hours. They use 3/8 inch Picco chain with a 1.1 millimeter gauge on 30, 35 or 40 centimeter bars.
Stop the engine and let it cool before you refuel, and disconnect the spark plug boot before service. That edition prints its figures in metric units, so the US measures below are converted.
The two smallest STIHL homeowner saws
The STIHL MS 170 is a 30.1 cc single-cylinder two-stroke rated 1.3 kW (1.8 hp), and the MS 180 is a 31.8 cc saw rated 1.5 kW (2.0 hp). The C versions add a quick chain tensioner and the ErgoStart easy-pull starter. All idle at 2,800 RPM, weigh about 3.9 kg (4.2 kg for the C) without a bar and chain, and take the same plug, tanks and chain.

How the MS 170 and MS 180 differ
VersusGuy lists the MS 170 as a 30.1 cc engine producing 1.6 kW (2.2 hp) and describes the MS 180 as noticeably more powerful, and its companion comparison notes the weight is identical.
Because the two share a frame and service parts, the fuel mix, plug and filter information here applies to both saws. The real choice is between the MS 170's lower price and the MS 180's extra power for the same weight.
When to use cold start, warm start and run on an MS 170 or MS 180
The STIHL manual for the MS 170 and MS 180 ties the master control lever position to what the engine just did. Cold start is for a cold engine, for when the engine stalls as you open the throttle after starting, and when the fuel tank has run empty.
Warm start is for an engine that has been running for about a minute, after the engine has fired for the first time, and after ventilating the combustion chamber if the engine was flooded. From warm start the lever returns to run when you squeeze the throttle trigger.
To move from run to cold start, hold the throttle trigger lockout and the trigger together and set the lever. Warm start can be selected only from cold start. Stop 0 switches the ignition off.
The manual describes two ways to hold the saw while starting, both with it placed securely on the ground, the chain clear of everything, the left hand on the handlebar with the thumb wrapped around it, and the right foot in the rear handle.
Chain brake service interval and the 3 second test for the MS 170 and MS 180
Before starting work, the manual says to run the engine at idle, engage the chain brake by pushing the hand guard toward the bar nose, and open the throttle wide for no more than three seconds. The chain must not rotate, and the hand guard must be free of dirt and move easily. It says the brake wears in normal use and should be serviced by trained personnel, ideally an authorized STIHL dealer, quarterly for full-time use, every six months for part-time use and annually for occasional use.
It also says the inertia of the front hand guard can trigger the brake in a kickback even if your left hand is not behind the guard, as in a felling cut, but only if the hand guard has not been modified. Releasing the brake by pulling the guard back is required before opening the throttle, because running the engine at high revs with the chain locked will quickly damage the engine and the clutch and brake.
MS 170 versus MS 180 in STIHL's specifications
The two saws differ mainly in engine size. The MS 170 is 30.1 cm³ with a 37 mm bore and 28 mm stroke, rated 1.3 kW (1.8 hp) at 8,500 RPM. The MS 180 is 31.8 cm³ with a 38 mm bore and the same stroke, rated 1.5 kW (2.0 hp) at 9,000 RPM.
Both idle at 2,800 RPM and use a Bosch WSR 6 F, NGK BPMR 7 A or STIHL ZK C 14 plug with a 0.5 mm gap.
Both hold 250 cm³ of fuel and 145 cm³ of chain oil, which a fully automatic speed-controlled pump delivers. Dry weight without the cutting attachment is 3.9 kg for the MS 170 and MS 180, and 4.2 kg for the MS 170 C with ErgoStart and the MS 180 C with quick chain tensioner and ErgoStart. For the carburetor, the standard setting is the idle speed screw (LD) turned counterclockwise until it seats firmly, then two turns clockwise.
MS 170 and MS 180 bars, chains, noise and vibration in STIHL's data
The manual lists Rollomatic guide bars in 30, 35 and 40 cm lengths with a 3/8 inch P pitch for both saws. The MS 170 takes the 1.1 mm groove width and its listed chain is the 3/8 inch P Picco Micro Mini 3 (61 PMM3, type 3610) with a 1.1 mm drive link gauge.
The MS 180 lists both 1.1 mm and 1.3 mm grooves, and adds the Picco Micro 3 (63 PM3, type 3636) and Picco Duro 3 (63 PD3, type 3612) chains at 1.3 mm gauge. Both use a 6-tooth sprocket for 3/8 inch P chain, and the manual quotes a maximum chain speed of 21.1 m/s for the MS 170 and 22.3 m/s for the MS 180.
The noise and vibration tables separate the two saws. Sound pressure is 98 dB(A) for all four versions, and sound power is 107 dB(A) for the MS 170 and 108 dB(A) for the MS 180. Vibration at the handles is 4.2 m/s² left and 5.9 m/s² right for the MS 170, and 6.6 and 7.8 for the MS 180, with the MS 180 C at 7.6 and 7.4, each with a 2.0 K-factor.
The figures are STIHL's own, and the difference between the two saws is largest at the handles.
In countries where the muffler carries a spark arresting screen, the manual says never to run the saw without it or with it damaged, to clean or replace it if it is dirty or heavily carbonized, and to fit new muffler plugs if any are missing. It says to check the screen first if the engine is down on power, and to fit a new spark plug after about 100 operating hours or sooner if the electrodes are badly eroded.
Sharpening the MS 170 and MS 180 chain: file size and part numbers
STIHL's sharpening tools table matches the file to the chain pitch, and the 3/8 inch P chain on these saws takes a 4.0 mm (5/32 inch) round file, part 5605 772 4006. The table pairs it with file holder 5605 750 4327, file gauge 1110 893 4000, taper square file 0814 252 3356 and a complete sharpening set, 5605 007 1027. STIHL chains are sharpened at a 30° angle, and the manual says that compliance with the listed angles and dimensions is absolutely necessary, because an improperly sharpened chain, especially with depth gauges that are too low, can increase kickback tendency.
It also gives a replacement rule for the chain sprocket. Replace it after two saw chains, or earlier if the wear marks are deeper than 0.5 mm, otherwise the chain's service life is reduced, and it says that using two chains in alternation helps preserve the sprocket. STIHL recommends original chain sprockets to keep the chain brake working as designed, and says carbide-tipped Duro chains are best sharpened by a servicing dealer.
- Service kit: Air filter, fuel filter and spark plug.
- Spark plug: Gap 0.5 mm; Bosch WSR 6 F is the other plug STIHL lists.
STIHL MS 170 and MS 180 chainsaws: questions
What fuel mix does a STIHL MS 170 use?
1:50, which is one part STIHL two-stroke oil to 50 parts gasoline, or 20 millilitres of oil per liter. STIHL specifies HP Ultra two-stroke oil or an equivalent high-quality oil. Its table gives 0.10 liter of oil for 5 liters of gasoline and 0.20 liter for 10 liters.
How big are the tanks on a STIHL MS 170 and MS 180?
The fuel tank holds 250 cubic centimeters, or 0.25 liter, and the chain oil tank holds 145 cubic centimeters, or 0.145 liter. A fully automatic, speed-controlled oil pump with a rotary piston feeds the bar. STIHL says to refill the chain oil tank every time you refuel.
What spark plug does a STIHL MS 170 use?
The manual lists a Bosch WSR 6 F, an NGK BPMR 7 A or a STIHL ZK C 14, all suppressed types, with an electrode gap of 0.5 millimeter. It says to replace the plug after 100 hours of operation, and to adjust the electrode gap as part of the yearly chart.
What chain does a STIHL MS 170 take?
3/8 inch Picco chain, the Picco Micro Mini 3, 61 PMM3, type 3610, with a pitch of 9.32 millimeters and a drive link gauge of 1.1 millimeters. Compatible Rollomatic guide bars measure 30, 35 or 40 centimeters long, with a 1.1 millimeter groove and a 6-tooth sprocket.
What is the difference between the STIHL MS 170 and MS 180?
The MS 170 has a 30.1 cc engine rated 1.3 kilowatts, and the MS 180 has a 31.8 cc engine rated 1.5 kilowatts. Both weigh 3.9 kilograms dry, idle at 2,800 RPM and use the same plug, tanks and chain. The C versions add a quick chain tensioner and ErgoStart, and weigh 4.2 kilograms.
How often should I replace the spark plug on a STIHL MS 170?
After 100 hours of operation, according to the maintenance chart. It also lists adjusting the electrode gap yearly. If the saw is hard to start or flooded, the manual says to remove the plug, dry it, crank the engine several times to clear the chamber, then refit it.
How do I mix fuel for a STIHL MS 170?
Pour the oil into an approved safety fuel canister first, then add the gasoline and mix until the oil is dispersed. Use fresh fuel, and STIHL MotoMix if you want it premixed with HP Ultra oil. Never fill the saw’s tank with straight gasoline, since the engine has no separate oil supply.
How do I clean the air filter on a STIHL MS 170?
The maintenance chart lists cleaning the air filter and replacing it when worn. The manual says fleece filters must not be cleaned with a brush, and that a filter can be knocked out or blown clear with compressed air from the inside outward. Replace a damaged one.
How much does a STIHL MS 170 weigh?
3.9 kilograms dry, without the cutting attachment, for both the MS 170 and MS 180. The C versions, with ErgoStart and, on the MS 180 C, a quick chain tensioner, weigh 4.2 kilograms. Add the bar, chain and the fuel and oil in the tanks.
What does the MS 170 chart say about the chain brake?
To function test it before starting work and at the end of work or daily, and have it checked by a STIHL servicing dealer once a year. Also test the throttle trigger, lockout, choke lever and stop switch. A chain brake that does not stop the chain is a reason not to run the saw.
What chain oil does a STIHL MS 170 use?
The manual recommends a quality chain lubricant and names STIHL BioPlus as a rapidly biodegradable choice, which must resist ageing. If you use a biological chain oil, fill the lubricant tank completely before storage. Never use waste oil, since it is harmful to health and the environment.
What chainsaw noise levels are listed for the STIHL MS 170?
The manual gives a sound power level of 107 decibels A-weighted for the MS 170 and 170 C, and 108 for the MS 180 and 180 C. Wear hearing protection. The vibration level at the handles is listed as 4.2 and 5.9 meters per second squared for the MS 170.

The filter parts: one service kit
STIHL sells a chainsaw service kit that fits the MS 271, MS 291, MS 311 and MS 391. STIHL USA’s part number for it is 1141 007 1800, and the page says it holds an air filter, a fuel filter and a spark plug. STIHL notes the MS 311 must have a serial number greater than 295938526 for that kit.
The manual confirms the two parts the kit replaces on a schedule: the fuel pick-up filter in the tank, which it says to clean or replace, and the air filter, which it says to clean and replace.
One thing to know about the plug. STIHL’s manual gives the gap as 0.5 mm. NGK’s catalog page for the MS 271 lists the BPMR7A with a 0.7 mm gap.
Set the plug with a gauge to the manual’s 0.5 mm.
The maintenance chart
| When | What |
|---|---|
| Before starting work and whenever the tank is refilled | Inspect the machine for condition and leaks; test the throttle trigger, lockout, choke lever, stop switch and chain brake; check chain lubrication, the saw chain for sharpness and tension, and the idle adjustment (the chain must not rotate). |
| Before starting work only | Check the manual fuel pump, the guide bar for wear and damage, the anti-vibration elements and the chain catcher. |
| At the end of work or daily | Clean the machine, the air intake on the fan housing and the cylinder fins. |
| Weekly | Deburr the guide bar and check the chain sprocket. |
| Monthly | Check the fuel pick-up body and clean or replace its filter insert; clean the fuel tank and the chain oil tank. |
| Annually | Replace the fuel pick-up body. |
| If faulty | Clean the air filter, adjust the spark plug gap, have the spark arresting screen checked by a dealer, and check the anti-vibration elements. |
| Every 100 hours | Replace the spark plug. |
| If damaged or as required | Replace the air filter, guide bar, chain catcher and safety label; sharpen the chain; retighten accessible screws and nuts. |
STIHL says to shorten the intervals in dusty conditions or with resinous wood, and to tighten the cylinder block screws after 10 to 20 hours the first time a professional saw is used.

Who the MS 271 Farm Boss is built for
SawOff's review describes the MS 271 as a mid-range saw for landowners and farmers powered by a 50.2 cc 2-MIX engine, and another review places it as substantial power for homeowners without the complexity of a professional-grade saw.
That positioning is why its service kit (filters, plug, fuel filter) is worth stocking: a saw used for seasonal firewood cutting accumulates hours quickly in autumn, and the air filter is the part that clogs first in dusty cutting.
Starting, the chain brake and carburetor limits on an MS 271
The STIHL manual for the MS 271 and MS 291 explains the master control lever in detail. From run you move it to cold start by holding the throttle trigger lockout and the throttle trigger together.
Warm start can only be reached from cold start, and blipping the throttle while pressing the lockout makes the lever jump from warm start to run. Stop is position 0.
Its warning about the chain brake is blunt: release it before opening the throttle, because running the engine at high revs with the chain locked quickly damages the engine and the clutch and brake.
Every new chain needs a 2 to 3 minute run-in, after which you recheck tension. The saw chain must always spin off a small amount of oil, and STIHL says never to run the saw without chain lubrication because a dry chain can be damaged beyond repair very quickly. The inertia of the front hand guard can also trigger the brake if kickback force is high enough, but only if the hand guard has not been modified.
MS 271 carburetor, air filter and storage in the manual
The carburetor leaves the factory on a standard setting. To return to it, turn the high speed screw (H) counterclockwise as far as it goes, at most 3/4 of a turn, then turn the low speed screw (L) clockwise as far as it goes and back 1/4 turn. Whenever L is adjusted, the idle speed screw (LA) usually needs readjusting too.
For unsatisfactory performance at altitude, the manual says to make the standard setting, warm the engine, and turn H slightly clockwise, which leans it, but no further than the stop.
The air filter is a fleece element. STIHL says to knock it out or blow it clear from the inside outward, and if that is not enough, to wash it in warm soapy water or STIHL special cleaner, rinse it inside out under a jet of water without a pressure washer, let it dry with no external heat, and not to impregnate it with oil.
For storage of about 30 days or longer, it says to drain and clean the fuel tank in a ventilated area, press the manual fuel pump at least five times if fitted, and run the engine at idle until it stops. Then remove the chain and bar, clean them and spray them with protective oil, clean the machine with attention to the cylinder fins and air filter, and store it dry and out of reach of children. If you use biological chain oil, fill the oil tank before storing.

STIHL MS 271 chainsaw: questions
What fuel mix does a STIHL MS 271 use?
STIHL specifies 50:1, with STIHL 50:1 two-stroke oil, called HP Ultra, or an equivalent high-quality oil. Its table gives 2.6 fluid ounces of oil per US gallon of gasoline, 6.4 ounces per 2 1/2 gallons and 12.8 ounces per 5 gallons. STIHL also sells MotoMix, which is premixed.
What are the STIHL MS 271 chainsaw’s fuel and chain-oil capacities?
The fuel tank holds 16.9 fluid ounces, or 0.50 liter, and the chain oil tank holds 8.1 fluid ounces, or 0.24 liter. A fully automatic, speed-controlled oil pump feeds the bar. STIHL says to refill the chain oil tank every time you refuel.
What spark plug does a STIHL MS 271 use?
The manual lists a Bosch WSR 6 F or an NGK BPMR 7 A, both of the suppressed type, with an electrode gap of 0.5 millimeter. It says to replace the plug after 100 hours of operation. NGK’s catalog lists the same BPMR7A with a 0.7 millimeter gap, so use a gauge and set it to the manual.
What is the STIHL MS 271 service kit?
STIHL USA’s chainsaw service kit, part number 1141 007 1800, contains an air filter, a fuel filter and a spark plug. It is listed for the MS 271, MS 291, MS 311 and MS 391, with a serial number above 295938526 for the MS 311. It is a convenient set for the yearly service.
What chain does a STIHL MS 271 take?
The manual lists .325 inch pitch, 1.6 millimeter (0.063 in) drive link gauge, and the low-kickback Rapid Micro 3 chain, 26 RM3, type 3634. Compatible guide bars measure 16, 18 or 20 inches with an 11-tooth sprocket nose, and the drive sprocket is a 7-tooth spur. Use the listed chain to stay within the kickback standard.
How often should I replace the fuel filter on a STIHL MS 271?
The maintenance chart lists the fuel pick-up body and filter in the tank as clean or replace the filter insert, and replace if faulty. STIHL says to shorten the listed intervals under difficult conditions such as heavy dust or resinous wood. A hard-starting saw with a fuel-starved feel is a reason to check it.
How do I clean the air filter on a STIHL MS 271?
Remove the air filter and knock it out or blow it clear. If that is not enough, wash it in a cleaner or warm soapy water, rinse it, and let it air dry without using heat. The manual says to replace a damaged filter, and to use the filter type matching the conditions you work in.
What chain oil does a STIHL MS 271 use?
A quality bar and chain lubricant. The manual notes that biodegradable oil such as STIHL BioPlus is suitable only if it resists ageing, and that used or waste oil is dangerous and must not be used. Refill the oil tank at every fuel stop so the chain is never dry.
How big is the STIHL MS 271 engine?
The MS 271 is a 50.2 cubic centimeter single-cylinder two-stroke with a 44.7 millimeter bore, 32 millimeter stroke and 3.5 horsepower at 9,500 RPM. The MS 291 next to it is 55.5 cubic centimeters and 3.8 horsepower. Idle is 2,800 RPM, and the maximum speed with cutting attachment is 13,000 RPM.
Does the STIHL MS 271 need the spark arrester cleaned?
Yes. The chart lists the spark arresting screen in the muffler as needing to be cleaned, and replaced by a specialist dealer if required. A clogged screen is a common reason a two-stroke loses power.
STIHL recommends its servicing dealer for that work.
How much does the STIHL MS 271 weigh?
The manual gives a dry weight of 12.3 pounds, or 5.6 kilograms, for both the MS 271 and MS 291 without the cutting attachment. Add the bar, chain and the fuel and oil in the tanks. A fully fuelled saw with a 20 inch bar is noticeably heavier than the figure.
Can I run straight gasoline in a STIHL MS 271?
No. It is a two-stroke, and the manual specifies unleaded gasoline mixed at 50:1 with STIHL 50:1 oil or an equivalent high-quality oil. Straight gasoline leaves the piston and cylinder without lubrication.
Mix the fuel in an approved container, not in the saw’s tank, and use the table for the amount of oil.
What is the air filter and fuel filter part number for a STIHL MS 271?
The air filter is STIHL 1141 140 4400 and the fuel filter is 0000 350 3518. Both are in service kit 1141 007 1800, or 1141 007 4100 for saws with a serial number above 295938526, together with an NGK BPMR7A spark plug.
