Ariens Deluxe: recall check, shear bolts and gearcase oil

Check the Ariens Deluxe model and serial for an open recall before seasonal service. For the machines covered by manual 05135600C, the auger gearcase uses L3 lube with a measured level below the cover; it is not filled like the engine sump. Use the specified shear bolts, and keep engine oil and plug selection tied to the separate engine manual.

Check the attachment-braking recall first

The February 2025 CPSC notice concerns some Deluxe, Platinum and Professional machines whose auger/impeller can keep rotating after release of the control. Affected owners must stop using the machine and arrange the free repair.

Check the white frame ID tag against Ariens’ model-and-serial list and repair status. A familiar model name alone neither establishes coverage nor clears the machine.

Apply this gearcase procedure only to the named builds

The October 2019 manual covers 921045 from serial 112545, 921046 from 109900, and 921047/921048 from 100000. It specifies gearcase oil 2.4–2.6 inches below the flat cover surface with the unit level.

Remove the fill plug and seal washer as instructed; do not remove the cover to check the level.

The plug torque is 80 pound-inches, equivalent to about 6.67 pound-feet. Setting a foot-pound wrench to 80 would apply twelve times the intended numerical torque.

Use a suitable tool and the actual manual units; damaged threads and seals need repair.

Lubrication does not replace a control inspection

This manual calls for general lubrication each season or every 25 operating hours. Keep oil and grease off the friction disc, friction plate and belts.

Replace a broken shear bolt with the specified part, not a stronger hardware-store bolt that defeats its protective function.

Stop the engine, remove the key, wait for movement to cease and follow the manual’s ignition-isolation procedure before service. Clear a clogged chute with its clean-out tool.

A failed stop control or attachment that keeps turning requires repair before further use.

Ariens Deluxe snow blower: shear bolts, gearcase oil, part numbers and schedule

The Ariens Deluxe two-stage snow blowers use shear bolt and nut 52100100, tightened to 7.9 to 16.5 newton-meters, and Ariens L3 synthetic gear lube 00068800 in the auger gearcase, filled to 2.4 to 2.6 inches below the cover surface. The service parts are Ariens 5W-30 engine oil, Hi-Temp grease, a seal washer and the engine spark plug, 20001246, and the schedule calls for lubrication each season or every 25 hours.

Before you service or clear it

Stop the engine, remove the key, wait for every moving part to stop and disconnect the spark plug wire before any service or clearing.

The auger gearcase oil

The one oil the manual gives a level for is the auger gearcase. Stand the machine on a flat, level surface, remove the oil fill plug and seal washer (without removing the gearcase cover), and check the level with a clean screwdriver or similar. It must sit 6.1 to 6.7 centimeters (2.4 to 2.6 inches) below the flat surface of the gearcase cover.

Add Ariens L3 synthetic severe duty gear lube if it is low. Ariens says other lubricants will not automatically void the warranty, but the warranty will not cover damage they cause. Inspect the seal washer, replace it if worn, and refit it rubber side down with the plug torqued to 9 N·m (80 lb-in).

The plug torque is 80 pound-inches. Do not confuse pound-inches with pound-feet.

Shear bolts

Two shear bolts connect the auger to its shaft and are designed to break if something hard jams the auger, which protects the gearcase. To replace them, align the holes in the auger with the holes in the shaft, insert the bolts, secure them with nuts and tighten to 7.9 to 16.5 N·m. Ariens says to use only Ariens OEM shear bolts.

The machine ships with two spares, and the part number is above.

The Ariens Deluxe snow blower schedule

Ariens Deluxe maintenance schedule: the tasks it lists.
TaskWhat the manual says
Add fuel stabilizerAt the time you buy the gasoline, to help it last.
Check clutch operation, traction clutch and the dual handle interlockThe auger must stop within 5 seconds of releasing the attachment lever; wheels must stop quickly.
Check fasteners and tire pressureKeep tires at the pressure on the sidewall; never inflate above it or with a compressor.
Check and change engine oil; replace spark plugUse Ariens 5W-30 engine oil; the spark plug is Ariens 20001246.
General lubricationEach season or every 25 hours of operation, with Ariens Hi-Temp Grease or equivalent.
Check auger gearcase oilLevel 2.4 to 2.6 inches below the cover surface.

The manual’s troubleshooting list points to shear bolts as the cause when the auger will not turn, and to a slipping or worn auger drive belt, a worn scraper blade, and skid shoes and scraper that need adjusting when the machine does not clear cleanly.

Ariens Deluxe snow blower: questions

What shear bolt does an Ariens Deluxe snow blower use?

Ariens lists shear bolt and nut part number 52100100, and says to use only Ariens OEM shear bolts. Two bolts connect the auger to its shaft. Replace them if an obstruction stops the auger and the bolts break, aligning the holes in the auger with the holes in the shaft.

How tight should the Ariens shear bolts be?

The manual says to tighten the bolts to 7.9 to 16.5 newton-meters after inserting them and securing them with nuts. Stop the engine, remove the key, wait for moving parts to stop, and disconnect the spark plug wire first. Never use a stronger bolt in place of a shear bolt.

What oil goes in the Ariens auger gearcase?

Ariens recommends only its L3 synthetic severe duty gear lube, part number 00068800, sold in 8 ounce (237 ml) bottles. Other lubricants will not automatically void the warranty, but Ariens says the warranty will not cover damage caused by unauthorized lubricants.

How do I check the gearcase oil on an Ariens Deluxe?

Put the machine on a flat, level surface, remove the oil fill plug and seal washer without removing the gearcase cover, and check the level with a clean screwdriver. It should be 6.1 to 6.7 centimeters, or 2.4 to 2.6 inches, from the flat surface of the cover. Refit the plug torqued to 9 N·m.

What oil and spark plug does an Ariens Deluxe use?

Ariens recommends its own 5W-30 engine oil, part 00091000 in a 16 ounce bottle and 00067600 in a 32 ounce bottle. The spark plug is Ariens part 20001246, a Champion RN14YC, NGK BPR6ES or Torch F6RTC.

What grease does an Ariens snow blower need?

Ariens recommends its Hi-Temp Grease or an equivalent, in 3 ounce cartridges (00036800) or a 14 ounce cartridge (00036700). Lubricate each season or every 25 hours of operation, and wipe each fitting clean before and after. Do not let grease or oil reach the friction disc, friction plate or belts.

What models does this Ariens manual cover?

The Deluxe series: 921045 Deluxe 24, 921046 Deluxe 28, 921047 Deluxe 30 and 921048 Deluxe 28 SHO, with the serial number ranges printed on its cover. The engine and the exact parts can differ by model and year, so match your machine’s model and serial number to the manual.

How do I check the clutches on an Ariens Deluxe?

The auger and impeller must stop within 5 seconds when the attachment clutch lever is released, and the wheels must stop quickly when the traction drive lever is released. For the dual handle interlock, the attachment clutch should stay engaged until the traction drive lever is released. Adjust or see a dealer if not.

How should I add fuel stabilizer to an Ariens snow blower?

Ariens says to add fuel stabilizer to the gasoline at the time you buy it to help it perform over its life, and lists a 4 ounce bottle, part number 04730400 except in Canada. The manual’s short term storage section has the full steps. It also asks that the engine use E10 fuel at most.

What tire pressure does an Ariens snow blower need?

The pressure listed on the tire sidewall. Ariens warns not to inflate above it, and not to inflate tires with a compressor but with a hand pump, and to use a clip-on chuck and stand to one side. Explosive separation of tire and rim parts is possible.

Why does my Ariens snow blower not throw snow?

The manual’s troubleshooting list starts with broken shear bolts when the auger does not turn, then a slipping or worn auger drive belt, a worn scraper blade, and skid shoes or scraper needing adjustment. Check the shear bolts first, because they are cheap and take minutes to replace.

How often should I service an Ariens Deluxe?

Check the clutches, the dual handle interlock, the fasteners and the engine oil at the start, and lubricate each season or every 25 hours. The schedule also lists checking the auger gearcase oil and tire pressure at intervals of several hours, and changing engine oil and replacing the plug per the engine manual.
