ECHO PB-580H/T filters, plug and fuel service
The PB-580H/T needs 50:1 mixed fuel, not crankcase oil. ECHO’s cited manual and support table distinguish the US BPM8Y plug from BPMR8Y in Canada, with a 0.65 mm gap. Inspect the intake, cooling system and fuel system by the matching schedule before assuming a weak-running blower needs a carburetor.
Check the intake path without introducing dirt
The July 2023PB-580H/T manual calls for daily/before-use air-filter and cooling inspections, and cooling/fuel checks at refueling. Close the choke for the prescribed filter service, keep loose debris outside the intake and replace a worn element as instructed.
Write down whether lost output comes with normal engine speed, poor engine speed or a changed sound. A blocked tube and a restricted engine intake are different checks. Do not reach into a fan housing or remove guards with the engine running.
The plug specification includes the market
ECHO’s PB-580H/Tspecification table lists NGK BPM8Y, with BPMR8Yfor Canada. Its0.65 mm gap is a specified setting, not proof that any short-reach plug fits. Match the serial and market before ordering a tune-up kit with a preselected plug.
The manual’s three-month tasks include plug and spark-arrestor inspection, with fuel-filter inspection/replacement in its yearly requirements. Inspection means following the actual condition and service criteria, not automatically replacing every component because the same kit contains it.
Mix by the gasoline amount, then label the container
A three-litre gasoline batch at 50:1 requires 60 ml of the specified air-cooled two-stroke oil. The manual requires 89-octane minimum gasoline and the specified ISO-L-EGD/JASO FD oil. Do not use straight gasoline in a blower that relies on premix for engine lubrication.
The 1.83Ltank and a seller’s runtime estimate do not establish a fuel-consumption rate without a stated load and test. Keep your own elapsed run time and fuel additions if planning a workday. Refuel only after shutdown and cooling, away from ignition sources.
For muffler or exhaust-port service, observe the manual’s skill ratings and dealer requirements. A clogged spark arrestor can be an inspection finding; removing it permanently is not a substitute for cleaning or proper repair.
Echo PB-580 backpack blower: fuel mix, spark plug, filters and maintenance schedule
The ECHO PB-580H and PB-580T backpack blowers run a 50:1 mix, which is 2.6 fluid ounces of oil per US gallon, using 89 octane fuel and JASO FD oil, in a 1.83 liter tank. The only plug ECHO allows is the NGK BPM8Y, or BPMR8Y in Canada, gapped 0.65 millimeter. The air filter is cleaned daily, the plug and muffler spark arrester inspected every three months, and the fuel filter inspected or replaced yearly.
Operating a poorly maintained unit can cause serious injury to the operator or bystanders. Stop the engine and disconnect the spark plug before service, and refuel only when the unit is cool. Figures come from ECHO’s July 2023 operator’s manual for the PB-580 H and PB-580 T, listed in the sources.
A 58 cc backpack blower: the mix, the plug and the filters
The ECHO PB-580H and PB-580T are backpack blowers with a 58.2 cc (3.55 cubic inch) air-cooled two-stroke engine, 46 mm bore and 35 mm stroke. The H has a handle-mounted throttle and the T a tube-mounted one. They move 517 cubic feet of air per minute at up to 216 MPH with the pipes on, weigh about 20.5 to 20.7 pounds dry, and idle at 2,700 RPM.
As two-strokes they have no sump, so their maintenance is the fuel and the parts on the intake and exhaust.

The maintenance intervals
| When | What |
|---|---|
| Daily or before use | Inspect and clean the air filter, the choke shutter, the cooling system and the recoil starter rope; inspect the fuel system; inspect and tighten screws, nuts and bolts. |
| Every refuel | Inspect the fuel system, and inspect and clean the cooling system. |
| Every 3 months | Replace the air filter if inspection finds wear; inspect the fuel filter and fuel cap gasket; inspect, clean or replace the spark plug and muffler spark arrester; inspect, clean and de-carbon the cylinder exhaust port. |
| Yearly | Inspect and replace the fuel filter, and replace the fuel cap gasket. |
ECHO grades each job from level 1, easy, to level 3, see your dealer. The air filter is cleaned by closing the choke, removing the cover and lightly brushing, and the plug and fuel filter are tune-up kit jobs. ECHO also publishes a maintenance kit page.
Any fuel hose replacement must be an EPA-certified low-permeation hose. For storage, empty and run the tank dry and put 7 cc (0.25 ounce) of fresh two-stroke oil into the cylinder through the plug hole.

Echo PB-580 backpack blower: questions
What fuel mix does an Echo PB-580 use?
50:1, which is 2.6 fluid ounces of two-stroke oil per US gallon of gasoline, or 100 cc per 5 liters. Use 89 octane unleaded gasoline with no more than 10 percent ethyl alcohol, and an oil meeting ISO-L-EGD and J.A.S.O. FD.
ECHO says not to use E-15 or E-85.
What spark plug does an Echo PB-580 use?
Only the NGK BPM8Y, or the NGK BPMR8Y in Canada, otherwise severe engine damage may occur. The gap is 0.65 millimeter (0.026 inch), adjusted by bending the outer electrode. ECHO grades the plug job as a level 2 task.
How big is the fuel tank on an Echo PB-580?
1.83 liters (62 US fluid ounces). The engine is a 58.2 cc air-cooled two-stroke with a 46 millimeter bore and 35 millimeter stroke. Idle speed is 2,700 RPM and wide open throttle is 6,550 RPM, with a maximum air speed of 216 miles per hour with the pipes fitted.
How often should I service the Echo PB-580 spark plug?
ECHO’s schedule lists inspecting, cleaning or replacing the spark plug every 3 months, along with the muffler spark arrester, and inspecting and cleaning the cylinder exhaust port. It says the time intervals shown are maximum, and use and experience determine the actual frequency.
How do I clean the air filter on an Echo PB-580?
Close the choke first so dirt cannot enter the carburetor throat, then remove the air filter cover and the filter and lightly brush off the debris. Refit it so it fits tightly in the cavity, and replace the cover. ECHO’s schedule has you inspect and clean it daily, and replace it at 3 months if wear is found.
When do I change the fuel filter on an Echo PB-580?
Inspect it every 3 months and inspect or replace it yearly, together with replacing the fuel cap gasket. It is a level 1 job and part of ECHO’s tune-up kit. On model year 2012 and later units, only an EPA-certified low-permeation fuel supply hose may replace the original.
What is the difference between the Echo PB-580H and PB-580T?
The H has a handle-mounted throttle and the T has a tube-mounted throttle. The engine, plug and maintenance are the same. The manual lists the H at 9.4 kilograms (20.7 pounds) and the T at 9.3 kilograms (20.5 pounds) dry, without the pipes.
How much air does an Echo PB-580 move?
14.7 cubic meters per minute (517 cubic feet per minute) at a maximum air speed of 96.4 meters per second (216 miles per hour) with the pipes fitted. Sound level at 50 feet is 70 decibels per the ANSI B175.2 scale, and the unit is rated for a fixed wide open throttle speed.
What does ECHO mean by maintenance skill levels?
Level 1 is easy with common tools, level 2 is moderate and may need specialized tools, and level 3 means see your dealer. ECHO grades every task in its interval table so you can decide whether to do it yourself. Tasks outside the maintenance schedule need a dealer’s repair instructions.
How do I store an Echo PB-580 for winter?
Empty the fuel tank and run the carburetor dry, then let the engine cool, remove the spark plug and pour 7 cc (0.25 ounce) of fresh, clean two-stroke oil into the cylinder. ECHO warns against storing where fuel fumes can reach an open flame or spark, and says fuel older than 90 days is stale.
Can I use E10 gasoline in an Echo PB-580?
Yes, within the limit. ECHO says gasoline may contain up to 10 percent ethanol or 15 percent MTBE, and must not contain methanol. Do not use E-15, E-85 or diesel.
Use 89 octane, mix at 50:1 and use fresh fuel, since stale fuel can cause hard starting and damage.
Do I need to clean the cooling fins on an Echo PB-580?
Yes. ECHO lists inspecting and cleaning the cooling system daily and at every refuel, as a level 2 task. Blockages in the cooling passages or debris on the fins raise engine temperature.
Brush accumulated debris from the intake grill between the backpack frame and the blower housing.
What is the ECHO PB-580 tune-up kit part number?
ECHO tune-up kit 90156Y fits the PB-580H and PB-580T. It holds the air filter A226000032, the fuel filter A369000440 and an NGK BPMR8Y spark plug, A425000000.
