ECHO SRM-225 fuel, plug and gearbox service

The SRM-225 uses 50:1 mixed fuel and a 0.65 mm spark-plug gap. Confirm the machine’s market and serial before choosing fuel or service parts.

A regional manual’s ethanol statement does not override US fuel restrictions. Keep gearcase and drive-shaft lubrication on their own hour log rather than treating fuel mix as the entire service routine.

The cited regional SRM-225 manual covers identified serial ranges and describes those separate jobs. At a hypothetical five hours of use each week, 25 hours arrives after five weeks and 50 hours after ten. Record both tasks rather than counting a gearcase service as a completed drive-shaft service.

Use the US specification and fuel rules for a US machine

ECHO’s current SRM-225 support table lists NGK BPM8Y, or BPMR8Y in Canada, and 50:1 gasoline/oil. The older regional manual linked here has a different market statement about ethanol; its own specification table also differs from that statement.

EPA’s E15 registration guidance excludes gasoline-powered nonroad lawn and garden engines. Do not interpret the regional statement as approval for E15 or E25 in a US gasoline trimmer. Obtain the exact market/serial manual and use fuel that satisfies its requirements and the applicable restrictions.

Size a small batch without changing the ratio

At 50:1, two litres of gasoline require 40 ml of approved two-stroke oil. Use an accurate measure and an approved container. Adding extra oil as a guess changes the ratio; it does not confirm that stale fuel or a running fault has been corrected.

Before service, stop the engine, disconnect the plug lead and let hot parts cool. Inspect the fitted filter, fuel system, fasteners and cooling path as directed. A line head, guard or replacement shaft must match the actual machine; the engine size alone cannot establish attachment compatibility.

Echo SRM-225 string trimmer: fuel mix, spark plug, filters and maintenance schedule

The ECHO SRM-225 string trimmer runs on a 50:1 gasoline and two-stroke oil mix with 89 octane fuel and JASO FD oil, in a 420 millilitre tank. The only plug ECHO allows is the NGK BPM8Y, gapped 0.65 millimeter. The plug and muffler spark arrestor are inspected every three months, the fuel filter yearly, and the gear housing greased every 50 hours.

The air filter is ECHO A226001410 and the fuel filter is A369000480.

Before you service or refuel it

Stop the engine and disconnect the spark plug before any service, and let the unit cool first, since the muffler and its cover can get extremely hot.

A 21 cc two-stroke: the mix, the plug and the line head

The ECHO SRM-225 is a straight-shaft string trimmer with a 21.2 cc (1.29 cubic inch) air-cooled two-stroke engine, a centrifugal clutch and a flexible drive shaft, weighing 4.8 kilograms (10.58 pounds) without the cutter head. As a two-stroke it has no sump. It runs on mixed fuel, and the plug is where its maintenance mostly lives.

ItemSpecification
Fuel to oil ratio50:1, which is about 2.6 fl oz of oil per US gallon of gasoline
Gasoline89 octane (mid grade or higher) unleaded. The manual’s fuel section says up to 25% ethanol is approved and methanol is not; its specification table says no more than 10%. Use 10% or less when in doubt.
Two-stroke oilISO-L-EGD (ISO/CD 13738) and J.A.S.O. FD. Using other oil voids the engine warranty.
Fuel tank420 mL (14.2 US fl oz)
Spark plugNGK BPM8Y only
Spark plug gap0.65 mm (0.026 in), set by bending the outer electrode; tighten to 130 to 150 lbf·in
Idle, clutch engagement, wide open throttle3,000, 4,300 and 10,000 RPM
Cutter headSpeed Feed 400 nylon line head, line capacity 6.0 m (20 ft)

ECHO warns that unmixed, improperly mixed or stale fuel older than 90 days may cause hard starting, poor performance or severe engine damage and void the warranty. Its own two-stroke oils may be mixed at 50:1 in all ECHO engines sold in the past. The fuel mix calculator does the sum for any batch size.

WhenWhat
Daily or before useInspect and clean the air filter and choke shutter, the cooling system and the recoil starter rope; inspect the fuel system and check screws, nuts and bolts.
Every refuelInspect the fuel system.
Every 3 monthsInspect the fuel filter and fuel cap gasket; inspect, clean or replace the spark plug and the muffler spark arrestor; inspect and clean the cylinder exhaust port.
YearlyInspect and replace the fuel filter, replace the fuel cap gasket and, where the inspection shows wear, the air filter.
GreaseApply lithium-based grease every 50 hours to the gear housing, and every 25 hours to the drive shaft on flex cable models.

ECHO grades each job from level 1, easy, to level 2, moderate. The air filter is ECHO part A226001410 and the fuel filter is A369000480. Clean a soiled air filter by soaking it in a water and detergent solution, brushing it lightly and letting it dry completely, and replace it if it is damaged, fuel soaked or has deformed sealing edges.

On model year 2012 and later units, the fuel hose must be a low-permeation hose certified by EPA. For storage, empty the tank, run the carburetor dry and put 7 cc of oil in the cylinder with the plug out.

Echo SRM-225 string trimmer: questions

What fuel mix does an Echo SRM-225 use?

50:1, which is about 2.6 fluid ounces of two-stroke oil per US gallon of gasoline. Use 89 octane unleaded gasoline and an oil meeting ISO-L-EGD and J.A.S.O. FD.

ECHO says failure to use certified oil voids the two-stroke engine warranty, and that fuel older than 90 days may cause damage.

What spark plug does an Echo SRM-225 use?

Only the NGK BPM8Y, ECHO says, otherwise severe engine damage may occur. The gap is 0.65 millimeter (0.026 inch), adjusted by bending the outer electrode, and the plug is tightened to 150 to 170 kilogram-force centimeters (130 to 150 pound-force inches).

How big is the fuel tank on an Echo SRM-225?

420 millilitres (14.2 US fluid ounces) for the serial range in the manual’s first specification table, and 0.39 liter (12.8 fluid ounces) for the second. Check which serial range yours is in. The engine is 21.2 cc, and the dry weight without the cutter head is about 4.8 kilograms.

How often should I change the spark plug on an Echo SRM-225?

ECHO’s schedule lists inspecting, cleaning or replacing the spark plug every 3 months, with replacement based on what the inspection finds. It grades the job as level 2, moderate difficulty. Remove the plug, check for fouling and a worn or rounded center electrode, and never sand blast it clean.

How do I clean the air filter on an Echo SRM-225?

Close the choke first, so dirt cannot enter the carburetor throat, then remove the cover and filter. Lightly brush debris off, soak a heavily soiled filter in a water and detergent solution, brush it lightly, rinse with clean water and let it dry completely. Replace it if damaged, fuel soaked or deformed.

How do I change the fuel filter on an Echo SRM-225?

Clean around the fuel cap and empty the tank, pull the filter out of the tank, take it off the line and fit a new one. It is a level 1 job listed as a tune-up kit part. On 2012 and later units, only an EPA-certified low-permeation fuel hose may replace the original.

Where do I grease an Echo SRM-225?

The gear housing takes lithium-based grease every 50 hours of use, and on flex cable models the drive shaft takes it every 25 hours. Both are level 2 jobs. Too much or too little grease shortens the life of the gears, so use the amount the manual’s service section gives.

What engine speeds are specified for the Echo SRM-225 trimmer?

Idle speed is 3,000 RPM, the centrifugal clutch engages at 4,300 RPM, and wide open throttle is 10,000 RPM. The cutter head is a Speed Feed 400 nylon line head, which holds 6.0 meters (20 feet) of line, and the gear case ratio is 1.62 to 1.

Can I use E10 gasoline in an Echo SRM-225?

The manual’s fuel requirements section says gasoline may contain up to 25 percent ethanol, and never methanol. Its specification table says no more than 10 percent ethyl alcohol, and never E-20 or E85. Because the two differ, use 10 percent or less when unsure, and use fresh fuel.

How do I store an Echo SRM-225?

Empty the fuel tank and run the carburetor dry, clean grease, oil, dirt and debris off the exterior, and let the engine cool. Then remove the spark plug and pour 7 cc of two-stroke oil into the cylinder. Do not store where fuel fumes can reach an open flame or spark.

What are the Echo SRM-225 air filter and fuel filter part numbers?

The ECHO air filter is A226001410 and the fuel filter is A369000480. The spark plug is the NGK BPM8Y, gapped 0.65 millimeter, and the plug and muffler spark arrestor are checked every three months.

Is the Echo SRM-225 muffler safe to touch?

No. ECHO warns that the muffler, or the catalytic muffler and surrounding cover, may become extremely hot, so keep clear of the exhaust and muffler area. Let the unit cool before service, and wear gloves to protect your hands from sharp edges and hot surfaces.
