Generac GP generator oil, service and recall checks

For Generac GP service, use the full product model and serial number, not just the wattage name. The GP3300i and GP3500iO manuals list 600 ml of oil; the GP6500/GP8000E manual below lists 1 litre. First oil changes differ too: 20 hours/one month for the inverters, 30 hours for that larger GP manual.

Oil, plugs and output are tied to the manual revision

The GP3300i lists an F 7 TC-type plug; the GP3500iO lists F 7 TC/F 7 RTC/BPR 6 ES equivalents. Use the listed part and required gap for the actual engine. A reused wattage name does not prove another generation has the same sump or service parts.

Six hundred milliliters is about 0.634 US quart. Fill gradually on level ground and check the indicated level; a nominal capacity does not establish how much oil remained after draining. The temperature chart chooses among SAE 30,10W-30 and synthetic 5W-30.

These cited manuals specify petroleum oil for initial break-in.

Record the hour meter before resetting a reminder

The two inverter schedules call for oil after the first 20 hours or month and then 100 hours or 6 months, whichever comes first. Their valve checks include the first 50 hours and later 300-hour service. Heavy use or heat can require more frequent oil work; consult that model’s schedule.

The cited GP6500/GP8000E schedule instead starts oil service at 30 hours, then 100 hours/yearly, with its separate severe-duty provision. Do not transfer the inverter’s 20-hour break-in rule to that engine. A meter reminder is a prompt to perform and record service, not evidence that an earlier owner completed it.

A 30 A outlet does not turn 2500 W into 3600 W

The GP3300i’s 2500 W continuous rating gives 2500÷120=20.83 A at 120 V. Its 30 A-shaped receptacle does not raise the generator’s output.

By comparison the GP3500iO’s 3000 W corresponds to 25 A. Confirm the individual breaker and connector limits as well as total running and starting demand.

A hypothetical 700 W refrigerator motor needing 2100 W momentarily, alongside 500 W of lighting and electronics, asks for 2600 W at startup. The peak requirement and the eventual 1200 W running total answer different questions. Obtain the appliance’s actual starting data rather than treating this example’s multiplier as universal.

Two recall campaigns require two applicability checks

CPSC’s April 16,2026 fuel-leak recall 26-407 lists specified GP product models, including GP6500 and GP8000E variants within limited serial ranges. Owners must check both identifiers through Generac’s campaign lookup before filling an affected new unit.

The notice distinguishes units already sufficiently filled to move the gauge offE, or operated without gasoline leakage, from affected unfilled or leaking units. Follow its actual conditions; an empty tank or a different sales description is not evidence that a unit passed the check.

The November 10,2022 handle recall reannouncement concerns a separate pinch/amputation hazard. Its revised remedy uses handle spacers and also covers units that received earlier full-cover guards. Ask for the applicable repair record before moving or buying one; a visible guard alone does not prove the revised remedy was completed.

Where the Generac GP3300i fits against the Honda EU2200i

GridReady's review frames the GP3300i as the inverter most people should compare against the Honda EU2200i, finds it wins on output and value, and finds the Honda wins on noise and runtime. Its TruePower output is measured under 3% total harmonic distortion, which the same review calls safe for laptops, CPAP units and refrigerator electronics.

The Best Generators lists 3,300 watts peak and 2,500 continuous from a 59.5 lb unit with Economy Mode, COsense shutoff and parallel-ready expansion. The continuous figure is the one to size a load against, and Economy Mode is the setting to check first if the engine seems to hunt at light load.

Choosing the GP3300i's economy setting and starting a hot engine

The Generac owner’s manual says the economy switch has two modes. On is the quietest and suits resistive loads that do not start a motor, such as a TV, video game, light or radio.

Off is better for a mix of motor and resistive loads, especially when they cycle on and off, such as an RV air conditioner or a hairdryer. Starting a cold engine takes the PowerDial to CHOKE with the economy switch OFF, and once it fires you turn the dial towards RUN, which reduces the choke gradually.

A hot engine needs no choke: turn the PowerDial from OFF to RUN, which opens the fuel valve, and pull. If the engine fires but does not continue to run, the manual says to turn the dial to OFF and repeat the starting steps. It also says to shut down by removing all loads, letting the engine run at no load for several minutes so internal temperatures stabilize, then turning the dial to OFF.

GP3300i ratings, derating and the 30 amp outlet

The specification table lists 2,500 running watts and 3,300 VA surge, 20.83 amps at 120 volts, a 149 cc engine, a 4.3 L (1.14 gallon) tank, and run times of 7 hours at 25% load and 4.5 hours at 50%. It weighs 59.5 lb dry and measures 22.25 by 13.35 by 18.4 inches. The operating range is 8°F to 104°F, and above 77°F there may be a decrease in power.

Two derating rules are worth knowing before an RV trip. Maximum power falls about 3.5% for each 1,000 feet above sea level, and about 1% for each 10°F above 60°F. The 30 amp NEMA L5-30R receptacle takes loads up to 2,500 watts continuous at 20.83 amps and is protected by a 25 amp push-to-reset breaker, and the duplex 120 volt outlets are protected by a 20 amp breaker.

For parallel use, the manual says to make connections with both inverters off and all loads disconnected, set the economy switch to the same position on both, start both units, and connect devices once the green output indicator lights. Do not disconnect any parallel kit connection while the units are running, and use only a Generac approved parallel kit.

GP3300i troubleshooting: the causes Generac lists, in order

The troubleshooting table in the GP3300i manual lists nine causes for an engine that will not start. In order they are the dial turned off, no fuel, a defective spark plug, a plugged fuel filter, a stuck dial assembly, the wrong oil level, a defective ignition coil, a flooded carburetor and a closed throttle plate.

The last two have specific fixes: drain the carburetor, and push the throttle plate toward the back of the unit to open it. An engine that starts and then shuts down points to fuel, oil level, contaminated fuel or a defective low oil level switch.

For an engine that runs rough it lists a stuck choke, dirty air filter, dirty plug or fuel filter, a gummed carburetor, a unit that has not warmed up and a clogged spark arrestor, and adds a footnote that engine speed rising and falling is normal while the generator starts up and loads vary. If there is no AC output the causes include an overheated inverter module. Generac's fix is to disconnect all loads and shut the generator down to reset the module, verify that the service door is on, let it cool for 15 minutes by running the engine with no AC output, and then press and hold the Reset button on the control panel before restarting.

Fuel leaking from the drain hoses means the carburetor bowl drain is open, and the remedy is to turn the valve clockwise to close it.

GP3300i or GP3500iO: what the two manuals say separates them

Generac sells these as neighbors and the manuals list the difference in numbers. The GP3300i has a 149 cc engine, 2,500 running watts and 3,300 VA surge, a 4.3 L (1.14 gallon) tank, and 7 hours at 25% load or 4.5 hours at 50%. It weighs 59.5 lb dry.

The GP3500iO has a 212 cc engine, 3,000 running and 3,500 starting watts, a 9 L (2.37 gallon) tank, 8 hours at 50% load and a dry weight of 75 lb. The 3500 also lists an hour meter on its control panel, which the GP3300i's control list does not mention.

The outlet limits follow the size. The GP3300i's 30 amp receptacle is good for 2,500 watts at 20.83 amps behind a 25 amp breaker, while the GP3500iO's carries 3,000 watts at 25 amps behind a 30 amp breaker. If a 2,500 watt RV load is your ceiling, the smaller unit is the lighter carry.

If the load is larger than that, the manual's numbers say to buy the larger unit, or pair two GP3300i inverters with a Generac approved parallel kit.

What the Generac GP3500iO is, and how its size affects service

Voltage Hero describes the GP3500iO as a gasoline open-frame inverter generator rated at 3,000 watts with a 3,500-watt maximum, and Propane VA lists a 2.37-gallon fuel tank good for about 8 hours at half load, a weight of 74.3 lb and a 3-year limited warranty.

An open-frame inverter is a conventional-generator frame with inverter electronics, so its service points (oil, plug, air filter) are as reachable as on a conventional generator, unlike the enclosed inverters where the panels must come off. The tank size sets how often you fill and stabilize fuel for storage.

What the GP3500iO's lights and Engine Smart Control are telling you

In the GP3500iO owner’s manual, the red overload LED is not always a fault. During motor starting it is normal for it to light for a few seconds.

If it stays lit and the ready light goes out, the engine keeps running without output power. Remove all loads, check whether the devices exceed the recommended output or have faulty or shorted connections, turn the dial OFF to reset and restart.

A yellow low oil LED means the oil is below the safe level and the engine shuts down, and the green power LED shows output.

The Engine Smart Control switch works like an economy mode. On is the quietest and best for resistive loads, and Off is better for a mix that includes motors, such as an RV air conditioner. The control panel also has an hour meter, so you can log oil changes against actual running time, and USB outlets rated 5 volts at 1 and 2.1 amps.

GP3500iO ratings, outlets and how it differs from the GP3300i

The GP3500iO lists 3,000 rated watts and 3,500 starting watts at 25 amps, a 212 cc engine, a 9 L (2.37 gallon) tank, 8 hours at 50% load, a dry weight of 75 lb and dimensions of 19.2 by 16.9 by 16.4 inches. Its 30 amp NEMA L5-30R receptacle carries up to 3,500 watts on starting and 3,000 watts continuous at 25 amps through a 30 amp breaker, where the smaller GP3300i's outlet is limited to 2,500 watts at 20.83 amps.

Like the GP3300i, it derates about 3.5% per 1,000 feet of elevation and 1% per 10°F above 60°F, and it lists an operating range of 8°F to 104°F. Its spark plug is Generac part 0J00620106, an F7TC, F7RTC or BPR6ES type, gapped 0.024 to 0.028 inch (0.6 to 0.7 mm), and it takes 0.6 L (0.6 qt) of oil.

Fuel cap vent, tipping limits and what a 3,000 watt generator can start

The GP3500iO manual carries an explosion and fire warning most inverters do not: verify that the fuel cap vent is ON for operation and OFF for transportation and storage. A vent left off is one of its listed reasons for an engine that will not start. It also says not to store or transport the unit at an angle greater than 15 degrees.

Its appliance table gives running watts and says to allow three times the listed watts to start the items it marks with an asterisk. Examples are a 12,000 Btu air conditioner at 1,700 watts, a 1 HP compressor at 2,000, a 1/2 HP submersible pump at 1,500, a freezer at 700, a furnace fan at 875, a clothes washer at 1,150, a coffee maker at 1,750 and a table saw at 1,750 to 2,000. By that three times rule, the 12,000 Btu air conditioner needs about 5,100 watts to start, which is more than the GP3500iO's 3,500 watt starting rating.

Why the GP3500iO is the heavier, longer-running Generac

The GP3500iO's manual lists a 9 L (2.37 gallon) tank and 8.0 hours at 50% load, against 4.3 L (1.14 gallon) and 4.5 hours at 50% for the GP3300i. It weighs 75 lb dry against 59.5 lb, and its 212 cc engine carries a 3,000 watt continuous rating where the smaller unit's 149 cc engine is rated 2,500 watts.

Both share the same operating logic: a dial with OFF, ON and CHOKE positions, an economy or Engine Smart Control switch, three status lights and a parallel connection. The differences that matter in daily use are the fuel cap vent and the hour meter, which the GP3500iO has and which shape the storage routine. Keep the meter reading with your oil change dates.

Generac's schedule asks for an oil change after the first month or 20 hours and then every 100 hours or six months, and only a running-hours counter lets you follow it accurately.

Unboxing a GP3500iO: it ships without oil

The manual has a first-day checklist that catches a common mistake. The generator is shipped without oil in the engine, so it must be filled before the first start, slowly, with the level verified often during filling so it does not overfill. Place the unit on a level surface, clean around the oil fill and drain plug, remove the cap and wipe the dipstick, add oil through a funnel, then insert the dipstick into the filler neck to read the level and confirm it is within the safe operating range before installing the cap and hand-tightening it.

Climate decides the viscosity: the chart offers SAE 30, 10W-30 and synthetic 5W-30, and the manual says to use the petroleum-based oil supplied for break-in before switching to synthetic. The carton should contain the main unit, owner's manual, engine oil, an oil funnel, a tool kit, a service warranty and an emissions warranty. If anything is missing, call Generac customer service at 1-888-436-3722 with the model and serial number, and record the model, serial number and purchase date on the manual's cover.

The AC receptacles are protected by a circuit protector that trips on overload or an external short. The manual says to disconnect all loads to find the cause before using the generator again, reduce the load, and push the protector button to reset. It warns that continuous tripping may damage the generator or the equipment.

Generac GP3500iO generator: questions

How much oil does a Generac GP3500iO take?

0.6 liter (0.6 US quart). Check the level at each use or every 8 hours. Use the petroleum oil supplied for the break-in before switching to synthetic, and choose the viscosity from the temperature chart.

What oil should I use in the GP3500iO?

The manual’s chart lists SAE 30, 10W-30 and synthetic 5W-30, chosen by the ambient temperature. Use the petroleum oil that comes with the unit for break-in first, and change the oil more often in dust or extreme heat.

What spark plug does the GP3500iO use?

Generac part number 0J00620106, of type F7TC, F7RTC or NGK BPR6ES or equivalent. The gap is 0.024 to 0.028 inch (0.6 to 0.7 mm). Replace it every 300 hours or every season.

When is the first oil change on the GP3500iO?

After the first month or 20 hours of operation, then every 100 hours or 6 months. Change it every month when running under heavy load or in high temperatures.

How long does the GP3500iO run on a tank?

8.0 hours at 50% load, on a 9 liter (2.37 US gallon) tank of unleaded fuel. The rated power is 3,000 watts with 3,500 starting watts, so half load is about 1,500 watts.

When should the valves be adjusted on the GP3500iO?

The manual says to check the valve clearance after the first 50 hours of operation and every 300 hours thereafter, and to adjust if necessary. The 300-hour list also carries valve clearance adjustment.

How much does the GP3500iO weigh?

75 pounds (34 kg) dry, at 19.2 by 16.9 by 16.4 inches. It is a 212 cc single-cylinder four-stroke, rated 25 amps at 120 volts.

Can I clean the GP3500iO with a hose?

No. Generac says not to use a garden hose, since water can enter the engine fuel system and stay in the windings’ insulation. Use a damp cloth, a vacuum or low-pressure air not above 25 PSI.

What is the operating temperature of the GP3500iO?

From 8°F (-13°C) to 104°F (40°C). Above 77°F (25°C) there may be a decrease in power. Maximum power also falls about 3.5% for each 1,000 feet above sea level.

Does the GP3500iO need a special spark arrestor service?

Generac lists the muffler screen and spark arrestor for cleaning or replacement every 100 hours or 6 months, and the spark arrestor again at 300 hours or every season. Disconnect the spark plug wire first.

What maintenance can I not do myself on a GP3500iO?

Generac marks the fuel filter replacement, the cylinder head check and the fittings and fasteners check for an Independent Authorized Service Dealer. Maintenance kits with oil, air filter, spark plug and a funnel are sold through a dealer.

What is the GP3500iO’s rated output?

3,000 watts rated and 3,500 watts starting, at 120 volts, 25 amps and 60 hertz. Exceeding the rating can overload it, and starting surges from motors count against the starting figure.

Oil: break-in first, then the schedule

The unit ships with a 1 liter bottle of SAE 30 petroleum oil, and Generac says to use petroleum oil for the engine break-in before switching to synthetic. Change the oil after the first 30 hours of operation, then every season. After that, the interval is every 100 hours or every year, and the hour meter shows CHG OIL at each 100 hours.

Under heavy load or in high temperatures, Generac says to change the oil and the oil filter every month. Check the oil level before each use, or every 8 hours of operation. Change the oil while the engine is warm from running.

Generac GP6500 and GP8000E generators: questions

How much oil does a Generac GP6500 take?

1.0 liter, or 1.06 quarts, for both the 6.5 kilowatt 389 cc engine and the 8.0 kilowatt 420 cc engine. Use SAE 30, 10W-30 or synthetic 5W-30, chosen from the temperature chart in the manual. The unit ships with a 1 liter bottle of SAE 30 petroleum oil for the break-in.

When do I change the oil in a Generac GP6500?

After the first 30 hours of operation, then every season, which the manual’s schedule gives as every 100 hours or every year, whichever comes first. Under heavy load or in high temperatures, change the oil and oil filter every month. The hour meter flashes CHG OIL at every 100 hours.

What spark plug does a Generac GP6500 use?

A Bosch F7TC or equivalent, Generac part number 0J00620106, gapped 0.028 to 0.031 inch (0.70 to 0.80 millimeter). Generac says to replace it every year. Disconnect the spark plug wires before working on the unit, since an accidental start can cause death or serious injury.

Can I use synthetic oil in a Generac GP6500?

Yes, but not at first. The manual says to use petroleum oil, which is the SAE 30 supplied, for the engine break-in before using synthetic. Its temperature chart lists SAE 30, 10W-30 and synthetic 5W-30.

After the 30-hour first change you can move to the oil that suits your climate.

How big is the fuel tank on a Generac GP6500?

29.9 liters (7.9 gallons) for both engines. The run time at 50 percent load is 11.5 hours on the 6.5 kilowatt engine and 10 hours on the 8.0 kilowatt engine. Maximum power decreases about 3.5 percent for each 1,000 feet above sea level.

What are the valve clearances on a Generac GP6500?

Intake 0.15 plus or minus 0.02 millimeter (0.006 inch) and exhaust 0.20 plus or minus 0.02 millimeter (0.008 inch), both cold. Generac says to check them after the first 50 hours and adjust if necessary, then every 300 hours, and to contact an authorized service dealer for it.

How do I clean the air filter on a Generac GP6500?

Turn the knob and remove the air filter cover, wash the filter in soapy water, and squeeze it dry in a clean cloth without twisting it. Clean the cover before refitting. Service it every 200 hours or every year, more often in dirty or dusty conditions, and replace it if it cannot be cleaned.

What maintenance kit fits the Generac GP6500 and GP8000E?

Generac kit 5777. It fits the GP5500, GP6500, GP6500E, GP7500E, GP8000E, XT8000E, HW5500, HW5500W, HW6500 and HW7500E, and holds an air filter, one spark plug, an oil funnel, a chamois, a fuel stabilizer sample and a spark plug wrench. The spark plug is Generac part 0J00620106.

What does the hour meter on a Generac GP6500 do?

It tracks hours of operation for scheduled maintenance. The CHG OIL message appears every 100 hours, and SVC, for servicing the air filter, at every 200 hours. The messages alternate with the elapsed time until the meter resets automatically, and the hourglass icon flashes while the engine records time.

How do I store a Generac GP6500?

Change the engine oil, then remove the spark plug, pour a tablespoon (5 to 10 cc) of clean engine oil or a suitable fogging agent into the cylinder, and pull the starter recoil several times to distribute it. Wear eye protection, since spray can come from the spark plug hole.

Can I hose down a Generac GP6500 to clean it?

No. The manual says not to use a garden hose, because water can enter the engine fuel system and cause problems, and water that enters through the cooling slots is retained in the windings and lowers insulation resistance. Use a soft brush, a vacuum, or low-pressure air not exceeding 25 PSI.

What is the difference between the GP6500 and the GP8000E?

The GP6500 and GP6500E are rated at 6.5 kilowatts with a 389 cc engine and a dry weight of 174.8 to 186 pounds. The GP8000E is rated at 8.0 kilowatts with a 420 cc engine and weighs 197.1 pounds. Oil, plug and fuel tank figures are the same.

Two GP-series recall checks before starting or moving it

The April 16, 2026 Generac recall covers certain GP-series model/serial combinations, including listed GP6500 and GP8000E variants. Fuel can leak from the carburetor during the first gasoline fill.

CPSC directs owners of affected units to stop use and check the model/serial through Generac’s recall process; its notice separately permits continued use of units already sufficiently filled or operated without leakage. Do not assume a dry new unit has passed that condition.

Follow the notice for the actual serial before adding fuel.

The November 10, 2022 handle-recall reannouncement is a different hazard: an unlocked handle can pinch fingers against the frame. The replacement repair uses spacers to move the handle away from the frame.

The notice also includes units with the earlier full-cover handle guards. A guard alone therefore does not prove the later remedy was completed.

Check both campaigns and retain the repair paperwork before moving a used generator.
