Honda EU generator service: oil, plugs and serials

Match the Honda EU model and serial before choosing oil or a plug. The cited EU2200i manual specifies 0.44 L and CR5HSB; the EU3000is manual below specifies 0.55 L and BPR6ES; EU7000is uses 1.1 L and BPR6ES. Older EU3000is manuals specify a different plug, so the serial-based manual lookup matters.

Service figures belong to a particular EU manual

The older EU3000is00X31ZT76210 manual specifies BPR5ES/W16EPR-U, while00X31ZS96120 specifies BPR6ES/W20EPR-U. Neither proves that the other generation’s part is a universal substitute. Use Honda’s serial-range index to select the document that covers the actual unit.

Output-light blinks are a coarse history, not an oil timer

In the cited EU2200i manual, startup output-indicator flashes represent hundred-hour bands. No flash means less than 100 hours. It cannot tell whether the first 20-hour oil service is due, or prove that any earlier service was completed.

Keep an independent running-hour log.

The three cited schedules put first oil service at 20 hours or one month and later oil service at 100 hours or six months, whichever arrives first. Their plug replacement and other service items differ: use the model’s own table rather than carrying the EU2200i’s 200-hour plug interval onto the larger units.

A reported household load is smaller than the headline rating

An EU2200i owner’s outage report described 400–600 W of household running load and about 8–9 hours per tank. That is one reported usage pattern, not a certified fuel-consumption test or a prediction at rated output.

Using the upper 600 W running example against 1800 W leaves 1200 W of continuous capacity. A motor starting can still exceed the remaining allowance. A proposed 1500 W heater added to that 600 W load would total 2100 W, exceeding continuous output by 300 W.

Recall repair is checked separately from routine service

CPSC’s March 17, 2020 Honda notice covers specified EU2200i variants and serials for an inverter-connection short-circuit/fire hazard. Check the actual model and full serial in the notice, then obtain the dealer remedy record. An earlier recall repair is not proof of this campaign’s completion.

Honda EU3000is and EU7000is generators: oil, spark plug and maintenance schedule

The Honda EU3000is inverter generator holds a maximum of 18 ounces of SAE 10W-30 oil and the EU7000is holds 1.2 US quarts. Both use an NGK BPR6ES spark plug gapped 0.028 to 0.031 inch, and both need the first oil change after the first month or 20 hours. After that, Honda says to change the oil every 6 months or 100 hours, clean the air cleaner every 3 months or 50 hours, and replace the plug and paper air filter yearly.

Valve clearance is 0.15 millimeter intake and 0.20 exhaust.

Before you service it

Run a generator only outdoors and well away from openings, and stop it and let it cool before you drain the oil. Every operating procedure is from Honda’s owner’s manual for the EU3000is (2021 edition) or the EU7000is (2020 edition), listed in the sources.

The schedule Honda prints

Honda EU3000is and EU7000is maintenance schedule. Honda says to perform each at the indicated month or hour interval, whichever comes first.
WhenWhat
Each useCheck the engine oil level and the air cleaner. On the EU7000is, also check GFCI operation.
First month or 20 hoursChange the engine oil.
Every 3 months or 50 hoursClean the air cleaner, more often in dust.
Every 6 months or 100 hoursChange the engine oil, check and adjust the spark plug and clean the spark arrester. On the EU3000is also clean the sediment cup.
Every year or 300 hoursReplace the spark plug and the paper air filter element, and have the valve clearance checked by a dealer. On the EU3000is the dealer also cleans the fuel tank and filter.
Every 2 yearsCheck the fuel tube, canister, purge tube and charge tube. On the EU7000is the fuel tank is cleaned and the fuel pump filter changed at 2 years or 1,000 hours, a dealer job.

Honda says the EU7000is has a catalytic converter, and that if the engine is not maintained as its manual requires the catalyst in the muffler may lose effectiveness. It also says that for commercial use you should log the hours to set the intervals, and that failure to follow the schedule could result in non-warrantable failures. To change the oil, drain it while the engine is warm, with the generator level, and refill to the upper limit.

Honda EU3000is and EU7000is generators: questions

How much oil does a Honda EU3000is take?

The maximum oil capacity is 18 ounces (0.55 liter). Use SAE 10W-30 of API service category SJ or later for general use. Fill with the generator level, to the upper limit, which Honda says means the oil reaches the filler neck, and do not overfill.

How much oil does a Honda EU7000is take?

The maximum oil capacity is 1.2 US quarts (1.1 liters) with SAE 10W-30 of API service category SJ or later. Honda says to fill it to the upper limit with the generator in a level position, and not to overfill. Drain the old oil while the engine is warm.

When do I change the oil in a Honda EU3000is or EU7000is?

The first change is after the first month or 20 hours of operation, whichever comes first. After that, change it every 6 months or 100 hours. Honda also says that for commercial use you should log the running hours to work out the right intervals for your use.

What spark plug does a Honda EU3000is or EU7000is use?

An NGK BPR6ES for both. The EU3000is manual also lists a Denso W20EPR-U as an alternative. The gap is 0.028 to 0.031 inch (0.7 to 0.8 millimeter).

Honda says to check and adjust the plug every 6 months or 100 hours and replace it every year or 300 hours.

What are the valve clearances on a Honda EU3000is and EU7000is?

Both list intake 0.15 plus or minus 0.02 millimeter and exhaust 0.20 plus or minus 0.02 millimeter, measured cold. Honda lists checking and adjusting valve clearance every year or 300 hours as a job for a servicing dealer unless you have the tools and are mechanically proficient.

How often should I clean the air cleaner on a Honda EU3000is or EU7000is?

Every 3 months or 50 hours, and more often when used in dusty areas, with a check each use. Honda says to replace the paper element type every year or 300 hours. The foam filter comes out of the air cleaner cover for cleaning and is reinstalled once it is clean.

How big is the fuel tank on a Honda EU3000is or EU7000is?

The EU3000is holds 3.43 US gallons (13.0 liters) and the EU7000is holds 5.07 US gallons (19.2 liters). Both run on regular unleaded gasoline with no more than 10 percent ethanol and a pump octane rating of 86 or higher. Honda gives the EU7000is a rated output of 5.5 kVA.

What engine is in a Honda EU3000is and EU7000is?

The EU3000is has the GX200T2, a 12.0 cubic inch (196 cc) four-stroke overhead-valve single. The EU7000is has the GX390T2, a 23.7 cubic inch (389 cc) engine with a compression ratio of 8.2 to 1. Both are forced air-cooled with a transistor ignition.

What exhaust maintenance does the Honda EU7000is generator require?

Yes. Honda says the generator is equipped with a catalytic converter, and that if the engine is not maintained as its manual requires the catalyst in the muffler may lose effectiveness. That is one more reason to follow the schedule for oil, air cleaner and spark plug.

What is the sediment cup on a Honda EU3000is?

A small cup in the fuel line that catches dirt and water before they reach the carburetor. Honda’s schedule lists cleaning it every 6 months or 100 hours on the EU3000is. Turn the fuel off first, and take care, since fuel spills can ignite.

What are the Honda EU3000is air filter part numbers?

The EU3000is has a foam air filter element, Honda 17211-ZS9-A02, and an outer filter, 17218-ZS9-A00. The EU7000is uses 17211-Z3S-003 for the element and 17218-Z0A-810 for the outer filter. Both take the NGK BPR6ES spark plug, Honda part 98079-56846.

How much does a Honda EU7000is weigh?

The dry mass is 263.2 pounds (119.4 kilograms) with the battery. It is 33.4 inches long, 27.6 inches wide and 28.4 inches high with the handle down. The EU3000is is much lighter at 130.7 pounds (59.3 kilograms) dry.

What does the maintenance schedule say about the fuel lines?

Honda lists the fuel tube, the canister, the purge tube and the charge tube as every 2 years checks, with the fuel tube replaced if necessary. It marks these as work for a servicing dealer unless you have the proper tools. Skipping the schedule could result in non-warrantable failures.

Honda EU2200i generator: oil capacity, spark plug and maintenance schedule

The Honda EU2200i inverter generator holds a maximum of 14 US ounces (0.44 liter) of SAE 10W-30 oil, uses an NGK CR5HSB spark plug gapped 0.024 to 0.028 inch, and has a 0.95 gallon fuel tank. Honda schedules the first oil change at one month or 20 hours, then every 6 months or 100 hours, and replaces the plug every year or 200 hours. The green output indicator blinks once per hundred hours run, so the generator counts its own hours.

Before you service it

Run any generator outdoors and well away from the house, and use a working carbon monoxide alarm indoors. The maintenance here is done with the engine off, cool and the spark plug cap removed.

A 14 ounce sump on a 121 cc engine

The EU2200i is Honda’s 2,200-watt inverter generator, a 47.4 pound machine with a 121 cubic centimeter overhead-cam engine. Its rated output is 1.8 kVA, and it produces up to 2.2 kVA for short periods, at 120 volts and 60 hertz, with a rated current of 15 amps. The engine is small enough that its oil capacity is 14 US ounces (0.44 liter), and the manual is blunt that this is a maximum: fill to the top of the filler neck and no further.

The EU2200i keeps its own count of the hours. When the engine starts, the green output indicator blinks once for each hundred hours the generator has run, up to five blinks at 500 hours and beyond, and does not blink at all under 100. That gives a working hour meter with no extra part, and it tells you which line of the table you are on.

Two habits that suit a machine this small

The 14 ounce sump heats and dirties its oil quickly, so the early oil change at one month or 20 hours is not optional. The other habit is the Eco Throttle: with it on, the engine slows under a light load, which saves fuel and noise and is the reason the manual gives the engine speed as a range. The switch is worth turning off for a load with a sharp start, such as a small pump.

Why the EU2200i is the benchmark, and what owners watch

ToolShedTested lists 2,200 starting watts, 48 dBA at quarter load, 8.1 hours on less than a gallon, CO-MINDER carbon monoxide shutoff and a 121 cc engine, and GridReady concludes after cross-referencing more than 1,500 owner reviews that it still wins on noise floor, engine durability and resale value.

PowerHornet reports that most problems owners meet are preventable with correct fuel management and routine maintenance, and that an owner who sees fuel use above Honda's published figures should investigate rather than assume it is normal.

Reading the EU2200i's output light as an hour meter

The green output indicator does a second job. According to the Honda owner’s manual, when you start the engine it blinks to show cumulative operating hours: no blinks for 0 to 100 hours, one blink for 100 to 200, two for 200 to 300, three for 300 to 400, four for 400 to 500 and five for 500 or more. Count the blinks at the first start of a season and you have a service-interval check without opening the case.

The Eco Throttle switch is the other control worth understanding. With it on, the engine slows when loads are turned off and speeds up when they return, which Honda recommends to minimize fuel use and reduce noise below a full load. The manual says to turn it off when several high loads are connected at once, to reduce voltage changes.

Pairing an EU2200i and preparing it for storage

For parallel operation Honda requires its own approved cable kit, sold as optional equipment. The manual lists the allowed combinations: an EU2200i or EU2200i Companion with another EU2200i Companion, or with an EU2000i or EU2000i Companion whose frame serial number falls in the ranges it prints, EAAJ-2017305 and later or EACT-1000001 and later. It says never to connect an EU2200i to any other generator model.

Its storage table is specific about time. Under one month needs no preparation. For one to two months the manual says to fill with fresh gasoline and add stabilizer.

It warns that fuel can deteriorate and oxidize in as little as 30 days, that a partly filled tank speeds that up, and that the warranty does not cover fuel system damage from neglected storage preparation. Before long storage it says to change the oil, put about one teaspoon (5 cc) of clean oil in the cylinder through the spark plug hole, crank a few revolutions, and pull the starter slowly until you feel resistance so the valves close and moisture stays out.

  • Air filter element: Foam element.
  • Engine oil: 14 oz maximum.

Honda EU2200i generator: questions

Can I run an EU2200i in the rain?

Not unprotected. Honda’s manual says to keep the generator dry and not to use it in wet conditions. Use a dry, open-sided cover made for generators, on level ground and well away from the building, with a working carbon monoxide alarm indoors.

How much oil does a Honda EU2200i take?

A maximum of 14 US ounces (0.44 liter). Honda says to fill to the top of the oil filler neck with the generator level, and not to overfill. The oil is SAE 10W-30 of API service category SJ or later.

What spark plug does a Honda EU2200i use?

An NGK CR5HSB with a gap of 0.024 to 0.028 inch (0.6 to 0.7 mm). Honda schedules a check and adjustment every 6 months or 100 hours, and a replacement every year or 200 hours. An incorrect plug can cause engine damage.

When is the first oil change on an EU2200i?

At the first month or 20 hours of use, then every 6 months or 100 hours. With only 14 ounces in the sump, the early change is worth doing on time. Drain the oil while the engine is warm so it drains completely.

How does the Honda EU2200i generator indicate service hours?

The green output indicator blinks at start-up according to the cumulative hours: none under 100 hours, one blink for 100 to 200, two for 200 to 300, up to five blinks for 500 hours or more. It works as a simple hour meter.

How much fuel does the EU2200i hold?

0.95 US gallon (3.6 liters). Use unleaded gasoline with a pump octane rating of 86 or higher, containing no more than 10% ethanol. Do not fill above the upper level mark on the fuel strainer.

What is the EU2200i’s rated output?

1.8 kVA rated and 2.2 kVA maximum, at 120 volts and 60 hertz, with a rated current of 15 amps. For continuous operation, do not exceed the rated power. Motors need more than their rated wattage at start-up.

What does the Eco Throttle do on an EU2200i?

With the switch on, the engine speed follows the load, which saves fuel and reduces noise. With it off, the engine runs at 4,000 to 4,500 RPM. Turn it off for loads with a sharp start, since the engine has to speed up to meet them.

How much does an EU2200i weigh?

47.4 pounds (21.5 kg) dry, at 20.0 by 11.4 by 16.7 inches. The engine is Honda’s 121 cubic centimeter overhead-cam GXR120T, with forced-air cooling.

How often should I clean the air cleaner on an EU2200i?

Check it each use and clean it every 3 months or 50 hours, sooner in dusty conditions. Honda says to wash it in warm soapy water, rinse and let it dry completely, or clean it in a nonflammable solvent. Oil-dip and squeeze as the manual shows.

What is the valve clearance on an EU2200i?

Cold, 0.15 mm on the intake and 0.20 mm on the exhaust, plus or minus 0.04 mm. Honda marks the check every year or 200 hours as a job for your servicing dealer unless you have the proper tools and are mechanically proficient.

What is the air filter part number for an EU2200i?

Honda 17211-Z07-000 is the foam air filter element and 17218-Z07-000 is the outer filter. The spark plug is Honda 98056-55777, the NGK CR5HSB. The same parts fit the EU2000i, EB2000 and EB2200i.

Used EU2200i: recall eligibility, load and asking price

The March 17, 2020 Honda recall identifies EU2200i, Companion and Camo serials EAMT-1000001 through EAMT-2098790. Water at an inverter connection can cause a short circuit and fire.

Stop using an affected unrepaired unit and arrange the free dealer repair. Participation in the earlier 2019 recall does not by itself establish completion of the 2020 campaign.

An EU2200i owner reporting outage use described about 400–600 W of lights, networking, a fan and refrigerator load, with roughly 8–9 hours from a tank. This is one household’s measured/reported use, not a runtime promise at rated output.

Against the 1,800 W continuous rating, a 600 W running load leaves 1,200 W of continuous capacity; motor starts still need their own margin. Measure your actual appliances before adding a heater or microwave.

G & C Honda’s 2023 EU2200i, stock 760079 was advertised at $999 against $1,099 retail in the listing checked October 18, 2026. Ask for the exact serial, recall repair record and written total; advertised price and model year do not establish service history.
