Honda GX engine oil, plugs and separate oil reservoirs
For Honda GX service, identify the engine model, type and fitted air cleaner. The cited small-GX manual lists oil quantities from 0.56 L to 0.60 L; the GX240–GX390 manual lists 1.1 L.
Both use BPR6ES-type plugs, but valve settings and separate reduction-case or oil-bath quantities differ. Keep those reservoirs separate when ordering oil.
Crankcase quantities from two GX manuals
| Model | Engine oil | Intake /exhaust clearance |
|---|---|---|
| GX120 | 0.56 L | 0.08 /0.10 mm,±0.02 |
| GX160 | 0.58 L | 0.08 /0.10 mm,±0.02 |
| GX200 | 0.60 L | 0.15 /0.20 mm,±0.02 |
| GX240, GX270, GX340, GX390 | 1.1 L | 0.15 /0.20 mm,±0.02 |
These are specifications, not a valve-adjustment procedure. Honda assigns the relevant work to a dealer or the shop manual. A mechanic needs the exact type and cold-engine procedure; a general displacement label is insufficient.
The manuals recommend 10 W-30, API SJ or later, for general use and specify BPR6ES or Denso W20EPR-U at 0.7–0.8 mm. A correct plug type does not establish the correct filter housing, shaft, control cable or speed setting for the driven equipment.
The gearbox and air cleaner can hold different oil
Applicable small-GX reduction cases have their own instructions and quantities. The larger-GX manual describes a 0.30 L reduction case for the applicable type, while oil-bath air cleaners use 60 ml on GX240/GX270 or 80 ml on GX340/GX390. None is a substitute for the crankcase quantity.
For an example GX390 with the specified 80 ml oil-bath cleaner, 1.1 L plus 0.08 L totals 1.18 L across those two reservoirs. Filling 1.18 L into the engine alone would combine separate quantities incorrectly. Check that the engine has that cleaner before buying or adding its oil.
Hours and cleaner type choose the next service
Both manuals place initial oil service at 20 hours or one month, then 100 hours or six months. Cleaner service varies by configuration: the cyclone cleaner has 150-hour cleaning and 600-hour element replacement entries, while other types use different rows. Identify the actual assembly before copying a schedule.
The engine and any reduction case each need their specified level check. Oil Alert, where fitted, can stop the engine while leaving the switch on; Honda says to inspect oil first after such a stop. Repeatedly bypassing a shutdown does not diagnose its cause.
Compare a replacement by more than horsepower
A pressure washer or pump can depend on shaft diameter, length, keyway, bolt pattern, rotation and governed speed. Obtain those requirements from its equipment manual. A larger GX model’s power rating does not establish that the existing coupling, guard or frame accepts it.
Bring the complete engine label and equipment model to a parts supplier. Ask for the applicable parts drawing and shaft specification before ordering a replacement, then compare installation and starting controls as well as mounting dimensions.
Honda GX240, GX270, GX340 and GX390 engines: oil capacity, spark plug and valve clearance
Honda GX240, GX270, GX340 and GX390 engines take 1.1 liters (1.2 US quarts) of SAE 10W-30 and an NGK BPR6ES spark plug gapped 0.7 to 0.8 mm. Honda says to change the oil in the first 20 hours, and gives the valve clearance as 0.15 mm intake and 0.20 mm exhaust, cold.
Disconnect the spark plug cap before any service, and let the engine and exhaust cool first.
The engine on pressure washers, generators and compactors
The GX240, GX270, GX340 and GX390 are single-cylinder, overhead-valve, forced-air engines that share one owner’s manual. The GX240 and GX270 displace 270 cubic centimeters and the GX340 and GX390 displace 389 cubic centimeters. All four take the same 1.1 liter (1.2 US quart) oil capacity.
| Item | GX240 / GX270 and GX340 / GX390 |
|---|---|
| Displacement | 270 cc (GX240, GX270); 389 cc (GX340, GX390) |
| Net power at 3,600 RPM | GX240 5.9 kW; GX270 6.3 kW; GX340 8.0 kW; GX390 8.7 kW |
| Engine oil capacity | 1.1 L (1.2 US qt) for all four |
| Oil grade | SAE 10W-30, API SJ or later, for general use; other viscosities by temperature chart |
| Spark plug | NGK BPR6ES or DENSO W20EPR-U |
| Spark plug gap | 0.7 to 0.8 mm (0.028 to 0.031 in) |
| Valve clearance, cold | Intake 0.15 ± 0.02 mm; exhaust 0.20 ± 0.02 mm |
| Idle speed | 1,400 ± 150 RPM |
| Fuel tank (with tank) | 5.3 L (1.40 US gal) GX240, GX270; 6.1 L (1.61 US gal) GX340, GX390 |
| Fuel | Unleaded, pump octane 86 or higher, ethanol no more than 10% |
| Reduction case oil (applicable types) | 0.30 L (0.32 US qt), same oil as the engine |
Honda’s oil-bath air cleaner, on engines that have one, takes a separate 60 cubic centimeters (2.0 US ounces) on the GX240 and GX270 and 80 cubic centimeters (2.7 US ounces) on the GX340 and GX390, of the same oil as the engine. That is the source of the “80 cc” figure some listings quote, and it is not the engine’s crankcase capacity.

Choosing between the GX240, GX270, GX340 and GX390
T&L Equipment's GX comparison cautions that between series, for example GX240 to GX270 to GX340, you should check every position in the mounting-bolt pattern, and notes that equipment such as reversible plate compactors is built around one of the three depending on the machine's weight.
Honda's engine page explains that its horsepower is a net figure measured to the SAE J1349 standard with the production muffler and air cleaner fitted, which is why ratings printed on equipment can differ from a bare-engine number.
Altitude, Oil Alert and the pre-start checks on a GX240 to GX390
The Honda owner’s manual says the standard carburetor mixture is too rich at high altitude, which lowers power, raises fuel use and can foul the spark plug and cause hard starting. If you always run above 1,500 meters (5,000 feet), it tells you to have a servicing dealer modify the carburetor.
Even then, power falls about 3.5% for each 300 meters (1,000 feet) of altitude. It also warns that a modified carburetor is too lean for low altitude and can overheat the engine below 1,500 meters.
On types fitted with it, the Oil Alert system stops the engine before the crankcase oil falls below a safe level, and the engine switch stays in the ON position. The manual's advice follows from that: if the engine stops and will not restart, check the oil level before troubleshooting anything else. It still says to check the oil before every start, along with the fuel level, the air filter element and the equipment the engine drives, and on applicable types the reduction case oil.
Stabilizer, storage and transport for Honda GX engines
To use a stabilizer, the manual says to fill the tank with fresh gasoline, because air in a part-filled tank promotes deterioration, add the stabilizer as directed, then run the engine outdoors for 10 minutes so the treated fuel replaces the untreated fuel in the carburetor.
For storage, keep the engine level, because tilting can leak fuel or oil, in a ventilated dry place away from any flame appliance or spark-producing motor. Cover it only when cool and never with sheet plastic, because a nonporous cover traps moisture and promotes rust. Electric-start types need the battery recharged once a month.
If the cylinder was coated with oil for storage, the manual says brief smoke at the next start is normal. Before loading equipment onto a truck, let the engine cool for at least 15 minutes.

Honda GX120, GX160 and GX200: oil capacity, spark plug and maintenance schedule
The Honda GX120, GX160 and GX200 take SAE 10W-30 oil in slightly different amounts: 18, 19 and 20 US ounces (0.56, 0.58 and 0.6 liter). All three use an NGK BPR6ES spark plug, or Denso W20EPR-U, gapped 0.7 to 0.8 millimeter. Honda schedules the first oil change at one month or 20 hours and then every 6 months or 100 hours, with the plug replaced every year or 300 hours.
Engines with a reduction case have a second oil capacity of 17 ounces.
The figures below are from Honda’s owner’s manual for the GX120, GX160 and GX200, listed in the sources. A pressure washer, generator or pump maker who fits one of these engines may state its own oil amount for the machine, and the label on the engine names the exact model. Check that first, since the three engines take slightly different amounts of oil.
The horizontal-shaft engine under half the pressure washers and pumps in the shed
The GX120, GX160 and GX200 are Honda’s general-purpose horizontal-shaft engines. They turn up on pressure washers, water pumps, generators, plate compactors and a long list of other equipment, which is why their figures are among the most looked-up on this site. They are four-stroke, overhead-valve, single-cylinder engines.
What separates them is size: 122, 163 and 196 cubic centimeters, and with it a little more oil each step up.
| Item | GX120 / GX160 / GX200 |
|---|---|
| Displacement | 122 / 163 / 196 cm³ (7.4 / 9.9 / 12.0 cu in) |
| Net power at 3,600 RPM | 3.2 bhp (2.4 kW) / 4.8 bhp (3.6 kW) / 5.8 bhp (4.3 kW) |
| Engine oil capacity | 18 / 19 / 20 US oz (0.56 / 0.58 / 0.6 L) |
| Fuel tank | 0.53 US gal (2.0 L) for the GX120; 0.82 US gal (3.1 L) for the GX160 and GX200 |
| Dry mass | 28.9 / 33.3 / 35.5 lb (13.2 / 15.1 / 16.1 kg) |
| Valve clearance, cold | Intake 0.08, exhaust 0.10 mm for the GX120 and GX160; intake 0.15, exhaust 0.20 mm for the GX200 |
All three share the same oil type, plug and gap. The oil is SAE 10W-30 of API service category SJ or later. The spark plug is an NGK BPR6ES, or the Denso equivalent W20EPR-U, set to a gap of 0.7 to 0.8 mm (0.028 to 0.031 inch).
Idle speed is 1,400 RPM, plus 200 or minus 150. The valve clearance tolerance is plus or minus 0.02 mm, and Honda points to the dealer or the shop manual for setting it.
Honda’s schedule, in the order you will do it
| Interval | Job |
|---|---|
| Each use | Check the engine oil level, the air cleaner, and the reduction case oil where fitted. |
| First month or 20 hours | Change the engine oil, and the reduction case oil where fitted. |
| Every 3 months or 50 hours | Clean the air cleaner, more often in dust. |
| Every 6 months or 100 hours | Change the engine oil and reduction case oil; clean the sediment cup; check and adjust the spark plug; clean the spark arrester where fitted; clean the fuel tank and filter. |
| Every year or 300 hours | Replace the spark plug and the air cleaner element; check the idle speed and the valve clearance. |
| After every 500 hours | Clean the combustion chamber (a shop job). |
| Every 2 years | Check the fuel tube and replace it if needed. |
Honda gives cyclone-type air cleaners their own intervals: cleaned every 6 months or 150 hours and replaced every 2 years or 600 hours. Two details are specific to this family. Engines fitted with a reduction case, the gearbox on the output, carry a separate oil capacity of 17 US ounces (0.50 L), and that oil is checked and changed on the same schedule as the engine oil.
And the sediment cup under the fuel valve is a maintenance item, cleaned every six months, which is one reason a GX that sat all winter starts better once the cup is emptied.

Honda GX120, GX160 and GX200: questions
How do I clean the air filter on a Honda GX engine?
Take off the cover and remove the element, wash a foam element in household detergent and warm water, rinse and let it dry, then soak it in clean engine oil and squeeze out the excess. Honda gives separate intervals for cyclone-type cleaners.
How much oil does a Honda GX160 take?
19 US ounces (0.58 liter). The GX120 takes 18 ounces (0.56 liter) and the GX200 takes 20 ounces (0.6 liter). Fill with the engine level, to the bottom edge of the oil fill hole at the dipstick’s upper limit mark.
What oil does a Honda GX200 use?
SAE 10W-30 of API service category SJ or later is recommended for general use, and the same applies to the GX120 and GX160. Honda lists other viscosities for very hot or very cold ambient temperatures.
What spark plug does a GX160 use?
An NGK BPR6ES, or the Denso equivalent W20EPR-U. Gap it to 0.7 to 0.8 mm (0.028 to 0.031 inch). The same plug and gap apply to the GX120 and the GX200.
How often should I change the oil in a Honda GX engine?
At the first month or 20 hours, then every 6 months or 100 hours, whichever comes first. Engines with a reduction case have a separate oil to change on the same schedule. For commercial use, log the hours.
How much reduction case oil does a GX engine take?
On types that have one, 17 US ounces (0.50 liter). The reduction case is the gearbox on the output shaft. Its oil level is checked at each use and changed at the first month or 20 hours and every 6 months or 100 hours.
What is the valve clearance on a GX160?
Cold, 0.08 mm on the intake and 0.10 mm on the exhaust, plus or minus 0.02 mm, the same as the GX120. The GX200 is 0.15 mm intake and 0.20 mm exhaust. Honda marks it a dealer job, checked every year or 300 hours.
How big is the fuel tank on a GX160?
3.1 liters (0.82 US gallon), the same as the GX200. The GX120 tank is 2.0 liters (0.53 gallon). Use unleaded gasoline of pump octane 86 or higher, with no more than 10% ethanol.
What is the sediment cup for on a Honda GX engine?
It sits under the fuel valve and traps dirt and water before they reach the carburetor. Honda schedules it to be cleaned every 6 months or 100 hours. A GX that sat for months often starts better once the cup is emptied and cleaned.
How much horsepower is a GX160?
Honda’s manual states a net power of 3.6 kW (4.8 bhp) at 3,600 RPM, measured to SAE J1349. The GX120 is 3.2 bhp and the GX200 is 5.8 bhp. Power in the finished machine varies with the speed it runs at and the conditions.
When should the GX spark plug be replaced?
Check and adjust it every 6 months or 100 hours, and replace it every year or 300 hours, whichever comes first. A plug cannot be judged by eye, so replacing it on the schedule is cheaper than diagnosing a weak spark.
How much does a GX160 weigh?
33.3 pounds (15.1 kg) dry with the type S PTO shaft and fuel tank. The GX120 is 28.9 pounds and the GX200 is 35.5 pounds. Those are dry weights for the engine alone, before oil and fuel.
