Honda HRX217: revision, oil and blade checks

For the HRX217VKA/HYA revision in the cited manual, Honda gives an approximate12–13.5oz oil refill and a five-hour or first-month initial change. Later HRX revisions use different engines. Record the complete mower model and serial before ordering parts or applying an oil figure, blade pair or recall notice.

The manual’s refill is not the bottle size

The cited revision uses BPR5ES at 0.7–0.8 mm and later oil service at 50 hours or six months. A 16-ounce bottle contains2.5 ounces more than the upper 13.5-ounce refill example. Use the manual’s level check instead of emptying an oil bottle supplied with a kit.

For an example two hours of mowing each weekend, five hours arrives during the third session. Calendar limits still apply when use is lighter. Keep the actual date and running hours with the service entry rather than adopting an HRC commercial schedule.

A 16-ounce bottle exceeds the cited refill rangeRefill lower figure: 12 US fl ozRefill upper figure: 13.5 US fl ozBottle: 16 US fl oz
The bottle exceeds the cited refill range; residual oil and the specified level check still control the refill.

Keep both blade identifiers together

Honda’s listed lower blade is 72511-VH7-000 and upper blade72531-VH7-000. The manual gives 49–59 N·m for the blade bolts with its specified hardware and procedure. Disconnect the plug cap and follow the blocking instructions before reaching beneath the deck.

An HRN’s VR8-numbered pair or an HRC’s VK6-numbered pair is not established as equivalent by a 21-inch deck label. Check the parts catalog for the exact revision and any current supersession.

Check recall applicability by the complete identity

CPSC notice23-287 includes certain HRX217K6 mowers, HRN216 mowers and GCV170/200 G5B pressure-washer engines with a camshaft defect that can cause sudden starter-rope retraction. An affected unit needs the free dealer inspection and repair. Earlier HRX engines are not automatically included; obtain the serial applicability and remedy record rather than treating a recent oil change as clearance.

Honda HRX217 lawn mower: oil, air filter, spark plug, blades and maintenance schedule

The Honda HRX217 mower, which has a GCV190 engine, takes about 12 to 13.5 ounces of SAE 10W-30 oil, changed after the first 5 hours and then every 50 hours or six months. Honda’s owner’s manual prints its parts: spark plug 98079-55846, an NGK BPR5ES gapped 0.028 to 0.031 inch, the paper air filter 17211-Z8B-901, and blades 72511-VH7-000 and 72531-VH7-000, which must be used as a set. The blade bolts torque to 36 to 43 foot-pounds.

The schedule below is Honda’s own.

Before you service it

Disconnect the spark plug cap and let the engine cool before any service, and keep the blades in mind: the two blades are sharp and can still turn. Every figure and part number is from Honda’s owner’s manual for the HRX217VKA and HRX217HYA, in the sources.

The HRX217: a GCV190 engine and a two-blade deck

The Honda HRX217 is a 21 inch walk-behind mower with a variable-speed Select Drive transmission and a 20.9 inch cutting width, a 87.7 pound dry mass, and seven cutting heights from 3/4 to 4 inches. The engine is the Honda GCV190, an 11.4 cubic inch (186 cc) four-stroke, overhead-cam, single-cylinder, air-cooled engine. The manual is unusual because it prints the Honda part numbers, which makes this the one page on this site where a mower’s filter and plug can be named from the maker itself.

Every 150 hours or two yearsReplace the air filter and the spark plug.

The manual’s oil change steps: turn the fuel valve off, drain the oil while the engine is warm, and refill to the dipstick marks. Its air filter steps: tap the paper filter on a hard surface, and blow low-pressure air from the inside, and never brush it. It says to inspect the fuel lines every two years and replace them if needed, and warns that failure to follow the schedule could result in non-warrantable failures.

What sets the HRX217 apart from Honda's other mowers

Lawnity's Honda comparison lists the HRX217 line with twin-blade MicroCut cutting, a NeXite composite deck that does not rust, Select Drive variable-speed self-propel, a hydrostatic-transmission option (HRX217HZA), a 5-year warranty and the GCV200 engine.

The composite deck and twin blades explain the parts you will buy: the blade set is a pair, and the deck needs cleaning, not painting. The mower's engine is the part the oil, plug and filter schedule above services.

Honda HRX217 lawn mower: questions

How much oil does a Honda HRX217 take?

Honda’s manual says to bring the oil level between the upper and lower marks on the dipstick, without screwing the dipstick in, which takes about 12 to 13.5 ounces if you are not using the supplied oil. Use SAE 10W-30 of API service category SJ or later. Fill slowly and check the level.

How often do I change the oil in a Honda HRX217?

After the first month or 5 hours of use, then every 6 months or 50 hours, and every 25 hours under heavy load or in high outside temperatures. Change it while the engine is warm, because warm oil drains quickly. Honda says to turn the fuel valve off first to reduce the chance of fuel leakage.

What spark plug does a Honda HRX217 use?

An NGK BPR5ES, which Honda lists as part number 98079-55846. The gap is 0.028 to 0.031 inch. Honda says to check the plug every 100 hours and replace it every 2 years or after 150 hours, and warns that an incorrect plug can cause engine damage.

What is the Honda HRX217 air filter part number?

Honda’s owner’s manual lists the air filter as 17211-Z8B-901, a paper filter. Honda recommends a Honda Genuine filter, saying a non-Honda filter can let dirt bypass it. Clean it after the first 25 hours, then every 6 months or 50 hours, and replace it every 2 years or 150 hours.

How do I clean the air filter on a Honda HRX217?

Remove the cover and filter, inspect it and replace it if damaged. Clean it by tapping it several times on a hard surface, and blow low-pressure air through it from the inside. Never try to brush the dirt off, because that pushes it into the paper.

Clean it more often in dusty areas.

What blades does a Honda HRX217 use?

It has two blades, a lower blade, part number 72511-VH7-000, and an upper blade, 72531-VH7-000. Honda says always to use them as a set. The blade bolt is 90105-VA3-J01, 2 required, with a spring washer 90502-VG3-000.

What torque do the blade bolts on a Honda HRX217 take?

36 to 43 foot-pounds, or 49 to 59 newton-meters, tightened with a torque wrench while a wooden block holds the blades from turning. Honda says if you do not have a torque wrench, take the mower to an authorized dealer. Disconnect the spark plug cap before you start.

What engine is in a Honda HRX217?

The Honda GCV190, an 11.4 cubic inch (186 cc) four-stroke, overhead-cam, single-cylinder, air-cooled engine with a bore and stroke of 2.71 by 1.97 inches and a compression ratio of 8.5 to 1. Its oil, plug and intervals are also covered on the GCV160 and GCV190 engine page.

What fuel does a Honda HRX217 take?

Honda says not to use gasoline with more than 10 percent ethanol, or more than 5 percent methanol. It warns gasoline can deteriorate in as little as 30 days, causing starting problems, and that fuel damage from deteriorated gasoline is not covered by the warranty. Use fresh fuel from a clean plastic container.

What are the Honda HRX217 mower’s cutting width and weight?

The cutting width is 20.9 inches, with seven cutting heights from 3/4 to 4 inches. The dry mass is 87.7 pounds. The transmission is a variable-speed type with ground speeds from 0 to 4.0 miles per hour, and the mower is 64.5 inches long and 23 inches wide.

What does the Select Drive cable adjustment mean?

Honda’s schedule lists adjusting the Select Drive cable after the first 5 hours, at 25 hours, and again at 50, 100 and 150 hours. It is the cable that controls the variable-speed drive. The manual’s page on it covers the adjustment.

Skipping it is a listed reason a self-propelled mower drives poorly.

Which HRX217 maintenance jobs does Honda leave to a dealer?

Cleaning the fuel tank and filter, checking the flywheel brake pad, checking and adjusting valve clearance and greasing the pinion gears, every 100 hours or year, and inspecting and greasing the rear wheel adjuster bushings every 150 hours. Honda says to leave them to a dealer unless you have the tools and are mechanically proficient.

Where do I buy Honda HRX217 parts?

Honda’s manual says to contact an authorized Honda servicing dealer for Honda Genuine parts, and points to its dealer finder. It lists the grass bag as 81320-VH7-D00, a fabric bag only, and the wheels as 42710-VH7-010ZA rear and 44710-VH7-010ZA front. Have the model and serial number ready.

HRX217K6 camshaft recall before another starting attempt

For the HRX217K6, the 2023 Honda camshaft recall is a separate check from routine plug and oil service. The defect can cause the starter rope to pull back abruptly.

Match the deck model/serial label to the notice and stop use if affected until the free dealer repair is completed. An older HRX model name or a recently changed plug does not establish that this campaign has been resolved.
