John Deere X300 and X320: engine-qualified service kits

For an X300 or X320, read the Kawasaki engine identity before ordering a Deere service kit. The X300 FH491V and FS541V rows use different kits and oil filters; the X320 FH661V and FS651V rows differ too. Neither a D-series kit nor the E130 Easy Change cartridge is identified by the X-series tractor badge.

FH and FS change the parts order

The X300 reminder sheet pairs FH491V with LG256/AM107423 and FS541V with LG265/AM125424. The X320 sheet pairs FH661V with LG249/AM107423 and FS651V with LG265/AM125424. Keep the engine letters with the kit and filter numbers.

The X300 FH row uses TY6081 plugs; its FS row uses M805853. The X320 sheet also lists M805853. Check the exact engine and current parts supersession rather than inferring plug fit from an oil-filter match.

The sheet quantities are not blind refill targets

The X300 sheet lists 1.8 US qt and the X320 sheet2.1 US qt. Two one-quart bottles total2.0 qt, which is 0.1 qt less than the X320 nominal figure. That is a supply comparison, not a direction to pour a full 2.1 qt into a partly drained crankcase.

Follow the operator manual’s dipstick and filling procedure after service. Filter changes, residual oil and the installed engine affect the work; a kit’s bottle count cannot replace the actual level check.

Nominal quantities on the cited X-series sheetsX300: 1.8 US qtTwo one-quart bottles: 2 US qtX320: 2.1 US qt
Two quarts are 0.1 quart below the X320 sheet’s nominal quantity; bottle count does not establish an actual refill.

Use the calendar and engine-hour record

Both reminder sheets show oil and filter marks at 8,100 and 200 hours in their first 250-hour charts. Those marks do not erase the operator manual’s calendar, adverse-use or safety instructions. Record oil and filter work as actual completed tasks, with dates and hours, rather than just marking that a kit was bought.

Oil is Turf-Gard 10W-30, 1.8 quarts in the X300 FS541V and 2.1 in the X320 FS651V, changed at 8 hours and then every 100.

Before you service it

Turn the ignition off, take the key out and disconnect the spark plug wires before any service, and let the engine cool first. Part numbers and intervals are from John Deere’s Maintenance Reminder Sheets for the X300 and X320, listed in the sources.

Two engines, so read the engine mark first

The X300 and X320 lawn tractors were built with two different Kawasaki V-twins over their production, and the filters, the plugs and the maintenance kit change with the engine. On the X300 the engines are the FH491V and the FS541V; on the X320 they are the FH661V and the FS651V. The engine model is stamped on the engine, so check it before you buy.

The Home Maintenance Kit is the tell: John Deere sells a different one for each engine.

The John Deere X300 and X320 lawn tractors schedule

The X300 and X320 run on a longer schedule than the smaller D-series. Deere’s sheet changes the oil and the oil filter at 8 hours, then at 100 and 200 hours. The air filters, the fuel filter and the spark plugs are replaced at 100 and 200 hours.

The X300 has both a foam and a paper air element, and both are replaced together. There are two spark plugs, one per cylinder, so buy two.

AM116304

Fuel filter

The same on every engine, replaced at 100 hours.

M805853

Spark plug

Two per tractor on the FS541V, FS651V and FH661V.

LG265

Home Maintenance Kit

For the FS541V and FS651V engines.

The kits contain the oil filter, fuel filter, air filters, plugs and two quarts of oil, so one kit covers a full service. If you are not sure which engine you have, take the Kawasaki model letters and number off the engine before you order rather than going by the tractor’s model name. The D110, D130, E130 and E140 page covers the smaller tractors.
