Toro 826LE snowblower service: engine oil and gearbox

For the cited Toro 826LE model 38620, serial250000001 and up, the manual gives a maximum26 US fl oz of engine oil and an RJ-19LM plug family. Its auger gearbox uses a separate lubricant specification. The single-stage Power Clear 721has different service instructions and should not be treated as the same snowthrower.

The 826LE manual is for serial 250000001 and up. Its gearbox instruction specifies non-synthetic GL-5 or GL-6 SAE 85–95 EP oil at the filler opening’s overflow level.

That is an auger gearbox specification, not engine oil or a general rule for newer Toro snowblowers.

A 26-ounce bottle contains six ounces more than its nominal 20-ounce figure, so bottle size cannot set the refill.

Keep the two service schedules separate

The 826LE calls for annual plug inspection and gap checking, replacement when needed, and annual gearbox-level and cable inspection. Its manual asks an authorized dealer to inspect the drive belts.

Use the model-specific belt lookup instead of an unverified aftermarket “fits Power Max” list.

These items are not a two-stage auger service kit.

Stop before reaching into the snow path

The 826LE’s auger and impeller must be motionless before a clog is cleared. Shut down the engine, remove the key and follow the manual’s ignition isolation; use a clean-out tool, never a hand. Have faulty stopping controls repaired before operating the machine.

Never put a hand into the chute or defeat a control to test it. Stop using a machine whose rotating parts do not stop as directed.

Toro 826LE Power Max snowthrower (38620): oil, spark plug, gearbox oil and schedule

The Toro 826LE Power Max snowthrower, model 38620, ships with only a few ounces of oil in the engine, so up to 26 ounces (0.77 liter) must be added before the first start. Toro specifies SAE 30W above 32°F, 5W30 or 10W from 0°F to 32°F and 0W30 below 0°F, a Champion RJ-19LM spark plug gapped 0.030 inch, and GL-5 or GL-6 SAE 85 to 95 gear oil in the auger gearbox. The oil is changed after the first 2 hours and then annually.

Before you clear or adjust anything

Stop the engine, wait for the auger to stop and pull the spark plug wire before you touch the auger, the chute or the belts. Never clear the chute with a hand.

A snowthrower that ships with almost no oil in it

The Toro 826LE Power Max, model 38620 (serial number 250000001 and up), is a walk-behind snowthrower with a Tecumseh engine. The first thing its manual says about oil is easy to skip: it arrives with only a few ounces in the engine, and the bottle in the box holds 25 ounces. Start it without adding oil and you run a dry engine.

The maximum fill is 26 ounces (0.77 liter).

The Toro 826LE Power Max snowthrower (38620) schedule

Recommended maintenance schedule from the Toro 826LE manual.
WhenWhat
Each useCheck the engine oil level and add oil if necessary.
After the first 2 operating hoursChange the engine oil; inspect and adjust the traction cable and the auger/impeller cable.
AnnuallyChange the engine oil; check the skids and scraper; inspect the traction and auger cables; inspect the spark plug and replace or gap it; check the auger gearbox oil; check tire pressure; lubricate the hex shaft; have a dealer inspect the traction and auger drive belts.
End of the seasonDrain the gasoline and run the engine to dry out the fuel tank and carburetor.

The oil interval is the surprise. Toro changes it after the first two hours and then once a year, not every 25 hours as on some snowthrowers, which makes the annual change one to do in autumn, before the machine is needed. Lightly lubricate the hex shaft with automotive engine oil at the same visit, once a year.

An authorized Toro dealer supplies the belts.

Toro 826LE Power Max snowthrower (38620): questions

How much oil does a Toro Power Max 826LE take?

A maximum fill of 26 ounces (0.77 liter). It ships with only a few ounces in the engine, and the bottle in the box holds 25 ounces, so add oil before the first start. Check the level on the dipstick, and add to the Full mark.

What oil should I use in the Toro 826LE?

Automotive detergent oil of API service classification SF, SG, SH, SJ, SL or higher. Above 32°F use SAE 30W, from 0°F to 32°F use SAE 5W30 or 10W, and below 0°F use SAE 0W30.

How often should I change the oil in the 826LE?

After the first 2 operating hours, then annually. If possible, run the engine just before the change, because warm oil flows better and carries more contaminants. Autumn, before the first snow, is the practical time.

What spark plug does the Toro 826LE use?

A Champion RJ-19LM or equivalent, with the gap set to 0.030 inch (0.76 mm). Check and gap the plug annually and replace it if it is cracked, fouled, dirty or worn. Do not clean the electrodes, because grit could enter the cylinder.

What oil goes in the 826LE auger gearbox?

GL-5 or GL-6, SAE 85 to 95 EP transmission oil. Do not use synthetic oil. Check the level annually through the pipe plug, with the oil at the point of overflowing the filler opening, and add oil if it is low.

What is the tire pressure on the Toro 826LE?

Between 17 and 20 PSI (116 and 137 kPa). The tires are overinflated at the factory for shipping, so reduce the pressure equally in both tires.

How should the scraper be set on the Toro 826LE?

Support the side plates at least 1/2 inch (13 mm) above a level surface, and make sure the scraper is 1/8 inch (3 mm) above and parallel to it. On cracked or rough pavement raise the scraper, and on gravel move the skids further down.

How do I adjust the traction cable on the 826LE?

With the traction lever disengaged, the pin in the slot should sit 1/32 to 1/16 inch (1 to 1.5 mm) from the front edge. If not, loosen the jam nut, turn the turnbuckle until the gap is right, and tighten the jam nut. Check it after 2 hours, then annually.

What should I do with the 826LE at the end of the season?

Drain the gasoline and run the engine to dry out the fuel tank and the carburetor. Toro’s manual also says never to store the machine with fuel in the tank, and to drain fuel if the machine will not be used for 30 days.

What fuel does the Toro 826LE use?

Fresh unleaded regular gasoline. Fill the tank outdoors and never indoors, and wipe up spills. For the engine’s own fuel limits, Toro refers to the engine operator’s manual.

What lubrication does the Toro 826LE snow-blower hex shaft need?

Lightly lubricate it annually with automotive engine oil. Move the speed selector lever to position R2, oil one end of the shaft, move it to position 6, oil the other end, then cycle the lever forward and rearward a few times.

Who replaces the drive belts on the 826LE?

Toro says to have an Authorized Service Dealer inspect and replace the traction drive belt and the auger/impeller drive belt if necessary, annually. Adjusting the cables is an owner job.
