Briggs & Stratton EXi oil checks and kit identity
Use Just Check & Add instructions only on a Briggs engine equipped for that system. The complete model, type and code still identify its oil and service parts. An older 120000–310000 change-oil schedule belongs to its own applicable manual and is not an EXi routine.
Just Check & Add is an actual service distinction
Briggs’ Just Check & Add guidance says equipped engines need oil-level checks and additions as required instead of scheduled routine changes. Do not impose an older engine’s generic50-hour rule on that system, or assume every engine with a similar EX/EXi sales name is equipped.
That feature does not make contaminated oil or a fuel-diluted sump acceptable. An abnormal rising level, fuel smell in the oil or other fault needs diagnosis and the applicable service instructions before continued use. Keep the level within its marks.
A kit’s oil bottle is not its engine capacity
The official84002441 kit listing contains a 593260 air filter, a 496018S spark plug and an 18-ounce bottle of SAE30 oil. Match the current parts list to the engine before purchase.
The 18-ounce bottle is a kit-content quantity, not a verified capacity for the installed engine. Match the full model, type and code to its applicable instructions and finish at the specified oil level. Bottle size, dry capacity and oil remaining after drainage are separate quantities.
Briggs & Stratton engines: oil, spark plug, filters and change interval
Briggs & Stratton says walk-behind mower engines typically take 15 or 18 ounces of oil and riding mower engines 48 or 64 ounces, with the 163 cc EXi 104M02 listed at 16. Use SAE 30 or 10W-30 from 40 to 80 degrees, synthetic 5W-30 in the cold, and change it after the first five hours, then every 50 hours or yearly on conventional oil-change engines; a Just Check & Add model follows its separate check-and-add instructions. The 5435K plug is listed for select 625, 675EX, 700EX and 725EX engines, and V-twin riding mowers have a kit with air filter 594201, fuel filter 691035, oil filter 492932S and plug 496018S.
Read the model, type and code number on the engine before you order oil or parts. Disconnect the spark plug lead before any service.
How much oil, and which oil
Briggs & Stratton’s guidance is that walk-behind mower engines typically take 15 or 18 ounces of oil, and riding mower engines typically take 48 or 64 ounces. Its parts store lists the 163 cc EXi vertical-shaft engine, model 104M02-0196-F1, at 16 ounces. The exact figure depends on the engine, so fill to the full mark on the dipstick and do not pour a whole bottle in.
| Condition | What Briggs recommends |
|---|---|
| Below 40°F (4°C) | Synthetic 5W-30. Straight SAE 30 causes hard starting. |
| 40°F to 80°F (4°C to 27°C) | SAE 30 or 10W-30. |
| Above 80°F (27°C) | Vanguard 15W-50 synthetic is recommended. |
| All temperatures | Synthetic 5W-30 works in most outdoor power equipment. |
| Oil quality | A high-quality detergent oil classified for service SF, SG, SH, SJ or higher. No special additives. |
| Synthetic oil | Acceptable at all temperatures, and it does not change the required change interval. |
How often, and how to change it
For walk-behind engines, change the oil after the first five hours of use, then annually or every 50 hours, whichever comes first. For riding mowers Briggs says every 100 hours or annually. The steps on Briggs’ page are: warm the engine, disconnect the spark plug wire, clean around the drain area, tilt the mower with the air filter side up, drain into a pan by turning the drain plug counterclockwise, replace the filter if the engine has one (lightly oiling the new gasket), and refill with the amount and type the manual gives.
The tools it lists are a 3/8 inch socket wrench with an extension, a box or adjustable wrench, a filter wrench if fitted, a drain pan and the dipstick.
The parts
Briggs sells parts by engine, and its parts lookup tool takes the model, type and code. The part numbers below are Briggs’ own. A part number on a page does not prove it fits your engine, so match it to the model number on yours.
| Item | Part number | What Briggs says it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Spark plug | 5435K (DIY pack of 796112S; also listed as 591868) | Select 625, 675EX, 700EX and 725EX engines |
| Air filter and pre-cleaner | 594201 / 797704 | In maintenance kit 84002442, for V-twin riding mower engines rated 20 to 27 gross horsepower |
| Fuel filter | 691035 / 84001895 | Same V-twin kit |
| Oil filter | 492932S | Same V-twin kit |
| Spark plugs (two) | 496018S | Same V-twin kit |
Kit 84002442 also holds an 18 ounce and a 48 ounce bottle of SAE 30 oil. That is a riding-mower kit. A walk-behind mower uses a different kit, so find yours by engine model on the parts store instead of buying by horsepower.

Briggs & Stratton engines: questions
How much oil does a Briggs & Stratton lawn mower engine take?
Briggs & Stratton says walk-behind mower engines typically take 15 or 18 ounces and riding mower engines typically take 48 or 64 ounces. Its parts store lists the 163 cc EXi engine, model 104M02-0196-F1, at 16 ounces. Because the figure depends on the engine, fill to the full mark on the dipstick instead of pouring a set amount.
What oil does a Briggs & Stratton engine need?
Briggs recommends SAE 30 or 10W-30 between 40 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit, synthetic 5W-30 below 40, and Vanguard 15W-50 synthetic above 80. Any of those should be a detergent oil classified for service SF, SG, SH, SJ or higher, with no special additives. Synthetic 5W-30 is its all-temperature answer for most outdoor power equipment.
How often should I change the oil in a Briggs & Stratton mower?
For conventional walk-behind engines requiring oil changes, Briggs lists the first five hours and then annually or every 50 hours. Just Check & Add-equipped EXi engines are a separate case; follow the engine’s own maintenance instructions. For riding mowers it says every 100 hours or annually.
Synthetic oil is accepted at all temperatures, and Briggs states it does not alter those intervals.
How do I change the oil in a Briggs & Stratton mower?
Run the engine briefly to warm the oil, disconnect the spark plug wire, and clean around the drain. Tilt the mower and drain the oil into a pan by turning the drain plug counterclockwise. If the engine has an oil filter, remove it and lightly oil the new gasket.
Refill with the amount and type in the manual, and check the dipstick.
What tools do I need for a Briggs & Stratton oil change?
Briggs lists a 3/8 inch drive socket wrench with an extension, a box or adjustable wrench, a filter wrench or pipe wrench if the engine has a filter, an oil pan or jug, and the dipstick. Add fresh oil, a rag, and a way to recycle the old oil. Most walk-behind engines need no filter.
What spark plug does a Briggs & Stratton 725EX use?
Briggs lists the 5435K spark plug for select 625, 675EX, 700EX and 725EX engines, sold as the do-it-yourself pack of the bulk plug 796112S. The 725EXi air filter is Briggs 593260, which is also listed for the 550E, 550EX, 625EX and 675EXi.
What is in the Briggs & Stratton maintenance kit for a V-twin?
Kit 84002442 is for V-twin riding mower engines rated 20 to 27 gross horsepower. It holds an air filter and pre-cleaner (594201 and 797704), a fuel filter (691035 and 84001895), an oil filter (492932S), two spark plugs (496018S), and 18 and 48 ounce bottles of SAE 30 oil. It suits that class of engine only.
Where do I find my Briggs & Stratton model number?
The model, type and code numbers are stamped on the engine, usually on the blower housing or near the spark plug, and Briggs’ manual and parts lookup tool are searched by them. Parts differ by type and code within one model, so a part that fits one engine of that model number may not fit another. Write all three numbers down.
Do all Briggs & Stratton engines have an oil filter?
No. Most small walk-behind mower engines have none, and Briggs’ oil-change guide says to replace the filter only if the engine is equipped with one. Larger riding mower and V-twin engines commonly have a spin-on filter, such as 492932S in the V-twin kit.
Look at the side of the engine for a canister.
Can I put synthetic oil in my Briggs & Stratton engine?
Yes. Briggs says synthetic oil is acceptable at all temperatures, and that it does not change the required change interval. Its recommendation for most outdoor power equipment is synthetic 5W-30.
Check the level after filling, and use only oil that meets the service classification in the manual.
Is it a problem if I overfill a Briggs & Stratton engine with oil?
Yes. Briggs warns to check the exact capacity in the operator’s manual so the engine is not overfilled. Too much oil can foul the spark plug, smoke, and load the engine.
If you overfill, drain a little until the level sits at the full mark on the dipstick with the mower level.
What is a 163 cc Briggs & Stratton engine used on?
The 163 cc EXi series vertical-shaft engine, such as model 104M02-0196-F1, is the type used on many walk-behind push mowers. Its parts page describes a dual sealing air cleaner for improved debris resistance. It uses the walk-behind figures, and the oil is listed at 16 ounces.
What maintenance kit fits a Briggs & Stratton 725EXi?
Briggs kit 84002441 fits the EX and EXi series push mower engines and holds an air filter, a fuel filter, an oil filter, a spark plug and an 18 ounce bottle of SAE 30 oil. Kit 5140B fits the 625E, 675EX and 725EX series with oil, an air filter and a spark plug.
Do not turn a shop kit description into engine fitment
Briggs’ 84002441 listing has a conflicting generic description: the descriptive paragraph mentions fuel and oil filters, but the itemized contents name air filter 593260, spark plug 496018S and an 18-ounce SAE 30 bottle. That paragraph does not establish that every EXi has an oil filter. Match the engine model, type and code to its parts diagram before ordering a kit or adding a service task.
The manufacturer’s Just Check & Add instructions require oil-level checks and adding as needed while retaining other maintenance. A conventional engine’s oil-change schedule must not be copied onto that feature without checking the applicable operator manual.
