Briggs 120000–210000: match manual form 277040
Use Briggs form 277040 only when it matches the engine’s full model, type and code. Its120000/150000 group lists 20 fl oz of oil; its 200000/210000 group lists 28 fl oz.
Another manual also uses 210000 but gives a different quantity. A six-digit group name does not by itself identify the engine or its fill.
Two groups in this document
Form 277040 associates20 fl oz with 0.6 L for 120000/150000 and 28 fl oz with 0.8 L for 200000/210000. Treat the US and metric entries as the manual’s stated quantities, then use the actual fill-level procedure. Do not combine values from different documents.
An example 20-ounce oil bottle is eight ounces short of a 28-ounce nominal quantity. That arithmetic helps select supplies; it does not show how much remains in an engine after draining or prescribe blindly adding a second bottle.
| Engine group or service | Form 277040 quantity or hours |
|---|---|
| 120000 /150000 oil | 20 fl oz /0.6 L |
| 200000 /210000 oil | 28 fl oz /0.8 L |
| Initial oil service | 5–8 hours |
| Later /severe oil interval | 50 /25 hours |
The 210000 overlap is a warning to identify the type
This form describes its 210000 column as342 cc. Form 276344 instead describes344 cc and different oil capacities. Use the type/code and applicable document rather than averaging those capacities or borrowing an Intek filter kit.
The form specifies an initial change after 5–8 hours and later 50-hour changes, with a 25-hour severe-duty provision. Dust and operating conditions matter alongside the calendar instructions. Its0.030-inch plug gap is not a complete spark-plug part number.
Keep the engine identification photograph with the service record. An EXi sales label or a mower deck badge is not a substitute for the model/type/code stamped on the actual engine. Just Check & Add instructions should be used only on an engine equipped for them.

The oil viscosity depends on temperature: SAE 30 at 40°F and higher (hard starting below that), 10W-30 from 0 to 100°F (which can raise consumption at 80°F or more), synthetic 5W-30 from -20 to 120°F, and 5W-30 for winter at 40°F and below. Do not use special additives.
The schedule and the parts
| When | What |
|---|---|
| Every 8 hours or daily | Check the oil level and clean the engine of debris. |
| After the first 5 to 8 hours | Change the oil, then every 50 hours; every 25 hours under heavy load or in high temperatures. |
| Every 25 hours | Service the air cleaner pre-cleaner if fitted, or replace the cartridge on engines without a pre-cleaner. |
| Every 50 hours | Inspect the muffler and spark arrester if fitted. |
| Every 100 hours | Replace the air cleaner cartridge on engines with a pre-cleaner; change the oil in the gear reduction unit if fitted; inspect or replace the spark plug; replace the fuel filter if fitted; clean the air cooling system. |
| Every 250 hours | Check valve clearance with the engine cold. |
| Dusty conditions | Clean the air cooling system and pre-cleaner more often; check every 25 hours. |
| Part | Briggs part number |
|---|---|
| Flat air filter cartridge | 491588 or 5043 |
| Flat pre-cleaner | 493537 or 5064 |
| Oval air filter cartridge | 697029 |
| Oval pre-cleaner | 273356 |
| Fuel filter | 694485 |
| Resistor spark plug | 491055 |
