Briggs Intek 210000–310000 oil and filter service
The cited Briggs form 276344 gives 44 fl oz without an oil filter and 48 fl oz with a filter for its 210000/280000/310000 groups. Match the complete model, type and code before using that table. These are change-oil instructions; they must not be replaced by an EXi Just Check & Add routine.
Filter configuration changes the stated quantity
The difference between44 and 48 fluid ounces is four ounces. It describes two configurations in this document, not an instruction to add four ounces after every filter change. Oil remaining after drainage and the manual’s actual level check still determine the refill.
Form 277040 uses a 210000 heading too, but describes342 cc and a different capacity; this form describes344 cc. The overlapping group number is the reason to retain the type/code and document form with the service record.
| Oil-system configuration or task | Form 276344 figure |
|---|---|
| No-filter configuration | 44 US fl oz |
| Filter configuration | 48 US fl oz |
| Initial change | 5–8 hours |
| Later oil change | 50 hours /season |
Record initial and recurring work separately
The manual specifies5–8 hours for the initial oil change, then 50 hours or the season later, with separate filter service where fitted. For an example ten operating hours per week, 50 hours arrives in five weeks. Seasonal limits can arrive first for a lightly used tractor.
Its0.030-inch gap does not establish which plug or filter fits a different Briggs engine. Identify the actual service part from the matching parts information and check current supersessions before purchasing a kit.
A kit contents list cannot set the fill
Compare the bottle quantity with the confirmed engine specification before starting. A partly drained sump, a dry capacity and an oil-bottle label are different measurements. Keep any extra oil available, fill by the correct procedure and investigate an abnormal rising level or fuel dilution instead of treating it as normal service.

Briggs & Stratton 210000, 280000 and 310000 Intek engines: oil, filter and plug gap
Briggs & Stratton 210000, 280000 and 310000 engines take about 44 fluid ounces of oil, or 48 with an oil filter (part 491056 or 492932), and a spark plug gapped 0.030 inch. The manual says to change the oil after the first 5 to 8 hours and then every 50 hours or season, or every 25 hours under heavy load.
Disconnect the spark plug wire, and the battery if the engine has an electric starter, before any service.
Three single-cylinder OHV engines, 344 to 501 cc
The manual covers the Model 210000 (Power Built and Intek I/C), the 280000 and the 310000 Intek I/C Extended Life Series. All are air-cooled, single-cylinder overhead-valve engines. They ship without oil, and Briggs warns that starting one dry damages it beyond repair and outside warranty.

| Valve clearance, exhaust | 0.005 to 0.007 in (0.13 to 0.18 mm), cold |
Two cautions on oil are worth repeating. Briggs says non-synthetic multi-viscosity oils such as 5W-30 or 10W-30 above 40°F cause higher than normal oil consumption in these air-cooled engines, so check the level more often if you use one. It also says SAE 30 below 40°F causes hard starting and possible bore damage.
Synthetic oil meeting ILSAC GF-2 with the API “SJ/CF ENERGY CONSERVING” mark or higher is acceptable at all temperatures, and does not lengthen the change interval.
Change the oil, and the parts to buy
Change oil after the first 5 to 8 hours of use, then every 50 hours or every season, or every 25 hours under heavy load or in high temperatures. Check the level daily or every 8 hours. To change it, set the engine level, disconnect the plug wire, drain through the drain plug while the engine is warm, refit the plug, fill to the FULL mark on the dipstick and do not overfill.
Replace the oil filter, if fitted, every 100 hours.
