Cub Cadet XT1/XT2: identify the engine before service

An XT1 or XT2 badge does not identify the engine service kit. Cub Cadet lists kit 490-950-C072 for its 547 cc engines, including specified XT1-LT42, XT2-LX42 and XT1-LT46 tractors. Read the engine label and complete tractor product number before ordering; a Kohler or Kawasaki version needs its own engine-qualified parts.

547 cc kit contents

The manufacturer’s C072 kit page lists an air filter/pre-filter, oil filter, fuel filter, spark plug and two 32-ounce oil bottles. Its named service identifiers include air filter 937-05066/737-05066, oil filter 951-12690/751-12690, and plug 951-10292A/751-10292A, with F6RTC also named. Confirm current substitutions against your product number.

547 cc kit: purchasing quantities versus service instructions
Package itemWhat it establishes
Two 32-US-fluid-ounce bottles64 fl oz = 2 US qt available
Air filter / pre-filterElement identity still requires engine match
Oil and fuel filtersDistinct parts with different connections
One spark plugNot a twin-cylinder engine kit

Two quarts in the box do not establish a two-quart refill. For an example service that required 1.8 quarts, the package would leave 0.2 quart unused.

The example compares supply quantities; it is not an oil-capacity claim for every XT1 or XT2. Follow the engine’s actual dipstick and refill procedure.

The tractor reminder is not the engine manual

The tractor operator manual directs engine service to the separate engine manual. It describes a 50-hour oil reminder and a 25-hour air-filter reminder. A reminder cannot account for every engine option, calendar limit, break-in requirement or severe operating condition.

Keep both hours and calendar dates. Use the applicable engine manual’s earlier limit even when the meter has not reached 50 hours. Tractor grease points and engine oil require separate service records.

Check the deck as a separate assembly

Use the deck’s part lookup for blades, belts, spindle components and guards. A 42-inch cutting width is not enough to prove a blade or belt fits.

Before service, shut down and follow the manufacturer’s parking, key-removal and ignition-disconnection instructions. Damaged interlocks or unsafe blade engagement need repair before mowing.

Cub Cadet XT1 and XT2 Enduro tractors: oil capacity, filters, spark plug and schedule

The Cub Cadet XT1 LT42 takes 1.8 US quarts (1.7 liters) of Cub Cadet SAE 10W-30 oil. Cub Cadet’s 547cc engine kit 490-950-C072 holds air filter 937-05066, oil filter 951-12690, fuel filter 951-3013, plug 951-10292A and two quarts of oil. Cub Cadet changes the oil after the first 5 hours and then every 50 hours with the oil filter, and checks the spark plug every 100.

Before you service it

Disengage the blades, set the parking brake, stop the engine and take the key out before any service, and disconnect the spark plug wire.

The Enduro tractors and their engines

The Cub Cadet XT1 and XT2 Enduro series are the company’s mid-range lawn and garden tractors. The XT1 LT42, for example, is a 42 inch deck tractor with a 547 cc single-cylinder Cub Cadet engine, a 3 gallon fuel tank, a Tuff Torq TL-200 hydrostatic transmission and a pressurised oil system with a spin-on filter. The same manual covers the LT, LX, GT and GX models and several engine suppliers, so the parts in the tables below depend on which engine sits under your hood: the 547 cc Cub Cadet engine, or a Kohler or Kawasaki.

The 547 cc engine kit

Cub Cadet sells a 547cc Engine Maintenance Kit, 490-950-C072, for tractors with the 547 cc engine, including the XT1-LT42, XT2-LX42 and XT1-LT46. It holds each of the parts you replace on the schedule, so the numbers below are the ones to buy separately if you would rather not buy the kit.

The Cub Cadet XT1 and XT2 Enduro tractors schedule

Cub Cadet’s chart puts most jobs against operating hours. The tractor’s LCD service minder and hour meter reminds you when the interval arrives: it flashes the oil message for seven minutes after the meter reaches 50 hours and the air filter message every 25 hours.

Other parts

Cub Cadet’s parts list gives blades 942-04308 for the 42 inch deck, or the Xtreme blade 942-04308-X, 942-04244A for the 46 inch, and 942-05052A and 942-05056A for the 50 and 54 inch decks. The 42 inch deck spindle is 618-06976, the front deck wheel is 734-04155, the battery is 925-1707D, and the gas cap is 751-14767.

Two habits matter on these tractors. Grease the lubrication points every 10 hours, because the deck spindles and front axle are the wear items that fail first when neglected. And use the service minder rather than the calendar: a tractor that mows a small lawn twice a week reaches 50 hours in about two seasons, so the oil change comes more from the hour meter than from the date.

  • Oil filter: The Kohler 12 050 01-S also fits.
  • Spark plug: F6RTC type.
  • Engine oil: Two 32 ounce bottles of Cub Cadet SAE 10W-30.
