Predator 212 oil, plug and horizontal-shaft fit

The older Predator 212 manual covering 68120/68121 lists 0.5 USquart oil, an NGK BP-6ES or Torch F6TC plug and 0.7–0.8 mm gap. These figures belong to that manual’s engine. Confirm the item label before applying them to another Predator 212, especially a different casting, shaft or later revision.

A coupling bored for a 1-inch shaft cannot be assumed to clamp correctly to this 3/4-inch shaft. The diameter difference is 1/4 inch. A reducing sleeve alone also does not establish correct key engagement, alignment, load or guarding; verify the driven equipment’s requirements with the installer.

Three hours and 20 hours describe different milestones

The manual describes about three hours of operational break-in without heavy loading or maximum speed. It separately places the initial oil change after approximately 20 hours. Keep both in the service log rather than treating the first three hours as the oil-change instruction.

Later oil work follows the six-month/100-hour column, with closer inspection under dusty or demanding use. The air-cleaner and fuel-system arrangement must match the actual item. Obtain the right diagram before buying a kit advertised for both hemi and non-hemi engines.

Storage is a fuel task before it is a parts order

The older document’s longer-storage procedure drains fuel from the tank and carburetor, followed by engine-preservation steps. Work outside with a cool engine and approved fuel handling. A blocked pull cord, fuel leak or fuel-contaminated oil requires diagnosis before more starting attempts.

An engine that stopped suddenly has several possible causes. A low-oil system is one check, not proof of the fault. Use the oil-level and hydrolock guide before cranking a machine with a locked recoil or liquid in the cylinder.

Predator 212 cc engine: oil, spark plug, valve clearance and maintenance schedule

The Harbor Freight PREDATOR 212 cc engine takes half a quart of oil, SAE 10W-30 above 32 degrees Fahrenheit and 5W-30 at or below it, and it should be changed after about 20 hours of use. The spark plug is an NGK BP-6ES or Torch F6TC gapped 0.7 to 0.8 millimeter, valve clearance is 0.10 to 0.15 millimeter on the intake and 0.15 to 0.20 on the exhaust, and idle is 1,800 RPM.

Before you service it

Remove the spark plug cap before any inspection, cleaning or maintenance. Wait for the engine to cool before you change the oil, because it is hot enough to burn. Figures below are from the Harbor Freight owner’s manual for the 212, 346 and 420 cc horizontal engines, in the sources.

Break-in and the first oil change

The manual gives two break-in periods. The operational break-in lasts about three hours of use, when you should not apply a heavy load or run the engine at its maximum speed. The maintenance break-in lasts about 20 hours of use, and after it you change the engine oil.

After that the schedule below applies. It also says to let the engine run at no load for five minutes after each start-up so it stabilises.

Changing the oil

With the engine stopped and level, close the fuel valve, place a drain pan under the crankcase drain plug, remove the plug and tilt the engine slightly to help the oil out, then replace and tighten the plug. Clean the top of the dipstick and the area around it, remove it, wipe it, fill to the full level with SAE 10W-30 and check on the dipstick. Recycle the used oil.

The manual says SAE 10W-30 is recommended for general use. For the air filter, take off the cover, remove the elements and check them for dirt, tap or blow out the dust, and wash a dirty element in mild detergent and water, rinse and dry it before it goes back.

Predator 212 owner checks before you replace anything

Pit Talks' troubleshooting guide says that when a Predator 212cc engine will not start the cause is the spark plug, the carburetor, the fuel delivery system or compression, in roughly the order it suggests checking.

Engine Oil Journal recommends SAE 10W-30 for most conditions and notes that the engine's splash lubrication system is why oil level checks matter more than on a pressure-lubricated engine.

Predator 212 shaft, idle speed and break-in from the manual

The Harbor Freight owner’s manual for the 212, 346 and 420 cc engines gives the 212 cc engine a 3/4 inch by 2.41 inch shaft with a 3/16 inch keyway and a 5/16-24 tapped end, where the larger 346 and 420 cc engines have a 1 inch by 3.48 inch shaft with a 1/4 inch keyway and 3/8-24 tapped end. That is the number to check before buying a clutch, pulley or pump for it. The idle speed is listed at 1,800 RPM, give or take 50, and the valve clearances are 0.10 to 0.15 mm intake and 0.15 to 0.20 mm exhaust.

It sets two break-in periods. The operational one lasts about 3 hours, during which you should not put a heavy load on the equipment or run the engine at maximum speed. The maintenance one lasts about 20 hours, after which you change the oil.

The manual also says to let the engine run at no load for five minutes after each start so it can stabilize.

Storing a Predator 212 for more than 20 days

For anything idle longer than 20 days the manual gives six steps. Let the engine cool and clean it with a dry cloth, and it specifically says not to use water because it will gradually enter the engine and rust it. Drain the tank outdoors away from ignition sources, then open the fuel valve and drain the carburetor bowl through the drain bolt, and the small sediment cup on engines that have one.

Change the oil, put one tablespoon of oil into the cylinder through the spark plug hole, refit the plug with the cap left off and pull the starter one or two revolutions until you feel compression.

Store it covered, dry, level and ventilated, away from water heaters, dryers and furnaces. After storage, the manual says to drain and replace fuel if untreated gasoline has sat for a month, if treated gasoline has sat beyond the stabilizer's stated time, or if the engine will not start. Its troubleshooting table also says an engine that stops suddenly is a low-oil shutdown until proven otherwise, a defective fuel cap that creates a vacuum can starve it, and one that stops under heavy load may have a dirty air filter or simply be running cold.

Backfires, knocks and the 90 day warranty on a Predator 212

The same manual lists what to try when the engine misbehaves. A backfire is blamed on impure or low quality gasoline, an engine that is too cold (it suggests cold weather fuel and oil additives), a stuck intake valve or an overheated engine, or incorrect timing. Knocking points to old gasoline or an overloaded engine, and it repeats that the equipment's load rating must not be exceeded.

The warranty printed in it is a limited 90 days from purchase for the original purchaser, and it excludes misuse, abuse, repairs done outside Harbor Freight's facilities, normal wear and a lack of maintenance. Keep the receipt and the oil-change dates, because the break-in schedule above is the maintenance record a claim would be measured against.

Predator 212 cc engine: questions

How much oil does a Predator 212 take?

The owner’s manual gives 0.5 quart for the 212 cc engine. It takes SAE 10W-30 above 32 degrees Fahrenheit and SAE 5W-30 at 32 degrees or below. The larger 346 and 420 cc engines in the same manual take 1.16 quart.

Fill to the full level on the dipstick.

When should I change the oil on a new Predator 212?

The manual says the maintenance break-in period lasts about 20 hours of use, and after it you change the engine oil. During the first three hours, its operational break-in, avoid a heavy load and maximum speed. After that, follow the schedule for oil changes.

What spark plug does a Predator 212 use?

The manual lists an NGK BP-6ES, or an NHSP or Torch F6TC. The gap is 0.7 to 0.8 millimeter. The manual warns that an incorrect plug may damage the engine, and to set the gap without prying against the electrode.

What are the valve clearances on a Predator 212?

The manual gives 0.10 to 0.15 millimeter for the intake valve and 0.15 to 0.20 millimeter for the exhaust valve. It marks checking and adjusting valve clearance as work for a qualified technician. The idle speed is 1,800 RPM, plus or minus 50.

What fuel does a Predator 212 take?

The manual specifies 87 octane or higher unleaded gasoline, and fuel with no more than 10 percent ethanol. It says do not use E85. The tank holds about one gallon, and you fill it to about an inch below the fill neck.

How do I change the oil in a Predator 212?

With the engine stopped and level, close the fuel valve and place a pan under the drain plug. Remove the plug, tilt the engine slightly to help the oil out, then replace and tighten the plug. Clean around the dipstick, remove it and wipe it, fill with SAE 10W-30 to the full level, and recycle the old oil.

How do I clean the air filter on a Predator 212?

Remove the air filter cover and the elements, and check them for dirt. Tap them or blow the dust out with air, and wash a dirty element in mild detergent and water several times, then rinse and let it dry fully. The manual says to service it more often in dusty areas.

What does the Predator 212 maintenance schedule cover?

The grid has five columns, from before each use to yearly or every 300 hours. Tasks include checking oil and the air cleaner, changing the oil, cleaning the spark plug, and cleaning the fuel tank, strainer and carburetor. Idle, valve clearance, carbon removal and fuel line work are marked for a technician.

Does a Predator 212 need to warm up after starting?

The manual says to let the engine run for five minutes at no load after each start-up so it can stabilise before you apply load. That matters more during the first three hours of the break-in period, when it also says not to run it at maximum speed.

What engine noise figure is specified for the Predator 212?

The specification chart lists a sound level of 104 decibels at 22 feet for the 212 cc engine, and 108 for the larger two. That is loud enough to need hearing protection during a long run. The manual’s run-time figure at 50 percent load applies to a full tank.

What is the shaft on a Predator 212?

The output shaft is 3/4 inch in diameter and 2.41 inches long, with a 3/16 inch keyway and an end tapped 5/16-24 UNF. The 346 and 420 cc engines use a 1 inch shaft. Rotation, viewed from the power takeoff, is counterclockwise.

What is the bore and stroke of a Predator 212?

The manual gives a bore of 70 millimeters and a stroke of 55 millimeters, with a compression ratio of 8.5 to 1. It is a horizontal single-cylinder four-stroke overhead-valve engine with forced air cooling. Those figures are printed in the same chart as the oil and plug.
