Yamaha EF2200iS oil quantity, plug and first service

The EF2200iS manual specifies 0.4 L of oil and an NGK BPR6HS plug gapped 0.6–0.7 mm. Its oil quantity line also prints 12.8 ounces, which is not the US-fluid-ounce equivalent of 0.4 L. Follow the manual’s level-check procedure, and ask Yamaha to clarify conflicting units before measuring solely in ounces.

The unit conversion matters in a small sump

The March 2021 Yamaha manual, sections 3-2 and 5-3, prints the same metric quantity and conflicting ounce figure. NIST’s US liquid conversion gives about 29.57 ml per fluid ounce. Thus 400 ml is about 13.5 US fluid ounces; 12.8 US fluid ounces is about 378.5 ml.

That 21.5 ml difference is 5.375 percent of a 400 ml fill. It is a reason to check the actual level, not an instruction to add 21 ml to an already full engine. The amount needed after a drain can also differ from nominal capacity.

Keep the socket and gap with the service record

The manual calls for a 20.8 mm spark-plug tool, which is not supplied. Its plug gap is narrower than several larger portable-generator specifications. Identify the BPR6HS plug before ordering; a similar-looking thread does not establish reach or heat-range compatibility.

Initial oil replacement is one month or 20 hours. Later oil service is six months or 100 hours, whichever comes first.

Yamaha marks specified fuel-system, valve and cylinder work for a dealer. Dust and wet conditions require closer air-filter attention.

Use the rated load when checking an outage plan

The manual lists 1800 VA rated output. For a unity-power-factor example, 1200 W of running demand leaves 600 W below that rating.

A motor’s starting surge can exceed that margin even when its eventual running demand fits. Read appliance starting requirements and the generator’s overload instructions separately.

Record hours, oil work and filter condition together. A calendar reminder alone misses intensive outage operation, while an hour-only reminder misses the one-month initial interval on a lightly used unit.

Yamaha EF2200iS inverter generator: oil quantity, spark plug and service

The Yamaha EF2200iS takes 0.4 liter (the manual also prints 12.8 ounces; those are not equal US-fluid measures) of oil, API SE or higher and JASO MA or MB, in 10W-30 or 10W-40. The spark plug is an NGK BPR6HS gapped 0.6 to 0.7 millimeter, and the plug needs a 20.8 millimeter socket that is not supplied. The first oil change is after one month or 20 hours.

The generator was shipped without oil, so oil must go in before the first start. It runs 4.2 hours at rated load on its 4.7 liter tank.

Before you run it

Run a generator outdoors and well away from openings into the building, and stop the engine before any maintenance work.

A 12.8 ounce sump on a 79 cc engine

The EF2200iS is Yamaha’s 1,800 VA rated inverter generator, a 55 pound unit with a 79 cubic centimeter air-cooled four-stroke overhead-valve engine. Yamaha states an operating time of 4.2 hours at rated load, or 10.5 hours at a quarter of rated load, on its 4.7 liter tank. The small engine takes only 0.4 liter of oil, so a short pour changes the level by a large margin and the level check matters more than on a bigger machine.

The service schedule

Yamaha EF2200iS periodic maintenance.
WhenWhat
Before each useCheck the oil level, the fuel level and any leakage, the fuel tank strainer for dirt and clogging, the recoil starter and outer covers for damage, that the output indicators are on, and the machine for visible damage.
First month or 20 hoursReplace the engine oil.
Every 6 months or 100 hoursReplace the engine oil, check the air filter for cracks and clean it (more often in wet or dusty areas), and check the muffler screen.
Every 12 monthsCheck the fuel tank strainer for cracks and that bolts and fasteners are tight; a Yamaha dealer cleans the fuel cock strainer and checks the breather hose.
Every 300 hoursClean and replace the spark plug if necessary; a Yamaha dealer checks the fuel hose, decarbonizes the cylinder head and checks and adjusts the valve clearance.

Yamaha marks the jobs that need special tools and data for a Yamaha dealer. The spark plug needs a 20.8 mm (13/16 inch) socket, which is not included with the generator, and the unit ships without engine oil, so the first oil must go in before the first start.

Yamaha EF2200iS inverter generator: questions

How much oil does a Yamaha EF2200iS take?

0.4 liter (0.42 US quart, 12.8 ounces). Check the level before every start. Yamaha shipped the generator without engine oil, so the first oil must be added before the first start.

What oil does the Yamaha EF2200iS use?

Yamalube is the recommended brand. Any oil of API SE type or higher and JASO MA or MB is available, in a viscosity of 10W-30 or 10W-40. Check the label on the bottle for the API and JASO marks.

What spark plug does the Yamaha EF2200iS use?

The standard plug is an NGK BPR6HS, gapped 0.6 to 0.7 mm (0.024 to 0.028 inch). The socket is 20.8 mm (13/16 inch), and Yamaha says the spark plug tool is not included with the generator.

When is the first oil change on a Yamaha EF2200iS?

After one month or 20 hours of operation, from the note under Yamaha’s maintenance table. The table’s later columns are 6 months or 100 hours, 12 months and 300 hours, and you should read them in your own manual.

How long does the Yamaha EF2200iS run on a tank?

Yamaha gives 4.2 hours at rated load or 10.5 hours at a quarter of rated load, on a 4.7 liter (1.24 US gallon) tank. Actual time varies with the load and the Eco mode setting.

What fuel does the Yamaha EF2200iS need?

Regular unleaded gasoline with a pump octane number of 86 or higher, or a research octane number of 91 or higher. Do not overfill above the red level mark on the fuel tank strainer, or the tank can overflow.

What is the rated output of the Yamaha EF2200iS?

1,800 VA, the generator’s rated output. The overload indicator comes on when the connected load exceeds it. In parallel with a second unit, Yamaha’s manual raises the combined rating, so read the parallel section for that.

How big is the Yamaha EF2200iS?

555 mm long, 300 mm wide and 470 mm tall (21.9 by 11.8 by 18.5 inches), weighing 25 kg (55 pounds) dry. The engine is an air-cooled four-stroke overhead-valve single, 79 cubic centimeters.

Does the Yamaha EF2200iS have an hour meter?

The manual describes indicator lights that flash to show run hours: one flashes every 100 hours and another every 1,000. Read the controls section of your manual for how the lights are read.

How do I drain the fuel from a Yamaha EF2200iS?

The carburetor has a fuel drain cock, and the manual has a section on draining the fuel for storage. Turn the fuel cock off, open the drain cock over a suitable container, and dispose of the fuel under local fuel-waste rules.

How often should the air filter be cleaned on a Yamaha EF2200iS?

Check it before use for cracks and damage and clean it on the schedule in the manual’s table. Yamaha says it needs cleaning more often in unusually wet or dusty areas.

Which Yamaha EF2200iS generator maintenance jobs need a dealer?

Yamaha marks certain items in its maintenance table for a Yamaha dealer because they need special tools, data and technical skills. Read the table in your own manual to see which. Checking the oil and fuel level before each use is an owner job.
