Small-engine oil capacity and spark-plug lookup
Use this lookup to choose the right model-specific service instructions, then set oil level by that manual. Dry capacity, refill quantity and maximum fill are different measurements.
A plug’s thread fit does not establish its reach or heat range. Confirm the engine and manual revision before buying either consumable.
Model-qualified oil and plug figures
| Engine / generator | Oil quantity description | Specified plug family |
|---|---|---|
| Honda GCV160/190 | 0.50 L dry; about 0.35–0.41 L refill | BPR5ES; pressure-washer BPR6ES |
| Kawasaki FR651V/691V/730V | 1.8 L without / 2.1 L with filter | BPR4ES, two plugs |
| Champion 100522 | 600 ml / 20.3 fl oz | F6RTC or BPR6ES |
| Yamaha EF2200iS | Manual prints 0.4 L and 12.8 fl oz | BPR6HS |
| Honda EU2200i | 14 fl oz maximum | CR5HSB |
| Honda HS720 | 0.61 US qt | BPR5ES |
| DuroMax XP12000EH | 1.2 L nominal | F6RTC type |
Yamaha’s two printed units are not exact equivalents: 12.8 US fluid ounces is about 378.5 milliliters, while 0.4 liter is 400 milliliters. The 21.5-milliliter difference is about 5.4 percent of 400.
Follow the stated level procedure rather than treating a rounded conversion as a fill target.

The Honda GCV figures distinguish an empty engine from a routine drain. Kawasaki distinguishes filter work.
These are not alternative quantities selected by preference. Use the procedure and dipstick instructions for the actual engine.
Cases that need more than one row
The engine-service directory also covers GX models, Briggs, Kohler, Predator, Westinghouse, Generac and equipment-specific applications. Their serial, application and manual-revision differences are preserved in the relevant articles rather than compressed into an unqualified brand-wide number.
When a kit includes oil, verify the required grade and quantity independently. For plugs, compare the complete manufacturer-approved designation and gap, not a marketplace claim that several different numbers are equivalent.
Oil capacity and spark plug for common small engines and generators
Oil capacity ranges from about 12 ounces on the smallest inverter generators to nearly two quarts on a V-twin, and pouring a whole quart into a Honda GCV160 overfills it. This table sets ten engines and generators side by side: oil capacity and grade, spark plug and gap, each taken from the maker’s own manual and linked to the page with its maintenance schedule. The plug types differ, but every gap sits between 0.024 and 0.032 inch, so a feeler gauge is the tool that matters.
It covers only the engines named, not every machine that carries a brand.
Every row comes from that engine’s or generator’s own manufacturer manual, linked on its page. The one exception is the Briggs & Stratton row, which comes from Briggs’ own online store page. It applies to the engine or model named, not to every machine that carries the brand.
Confirm the model on the label, and where your machine’s maker gives a different figure, follow the machine’s manual and check the level on the dipstick.
Twenty-nine engines and generators, side by side
Oil capacity is the figure people search for most, and it is also the one most often repeated wrongly, because engines that look alike take different amounts. A Honda GCV160 takes about 13 ounces at an oil change. A Honda GX160 takes 19, and a Kohler SH265 takes a little over 20.
A Kawasaki V-twin takes nearly two quarts. Pouring a whole quart into the smallest of them overfills it.

Spark-plug reach, heat range and fit
The plug types differ: F7TC, BPR6ES, BPR5ES, CR5HSB, BPR6HS and, on the Kawasaki twin, the colder BPR4ES, and heat range and reach differ with them, so a plug is not swapped by looks. What is the same is the gap. Every engine here specifies between 0.024 and 0.032 inch, a band narrow enough that a feeler gauge, checked in a minute, is the tool that matters on any of them.

What is not here, and why
A machine on this list may not be your machine. A mower, pressure washer or generator from another brand can carry the same engine, and its label names the engine model.
If your engine is not in the table, find the manual through the manufacturer support page, and use the Locate model plates and engine IDs to identify it first. We add an engine only when we have read its maker’s own manual.

Oil capacity and spark plug for common small engines and generators: questions
How much oil does a lawn mower engine take?
It depends on the engine. A Honda GCV160 takes 12.0 to 13.5 ounces at a change, a Honda GX160 takes 19 ounces, and a Kohler SH265 takes 0.63 quart at the full mark. Check the engine label for the model, then the maker’s manual, and fill to the dipstick.
Is there one oil capacity for all small engines?
No. Across the engines it runs from 12.8 ounces on the Yamaha EF2200iS to about 2 quarts on a Kawasaki V-twin. Engines that look alike can differ by several ounces, so always use the figure for the model on your label.
What oil do most small engines use?
SAE 10W-30 for general use appears in most of these manuals, and several add other grades by temperature, such as 5W-30 in cold, SAE 30 in heat and synthetic options. The manual’s chart for your engine decides, and the API label should show SJ or later.
Do all small engines use the same spark plug?
No, though many use plugs from the same family. The listed engines use F7TC, BPR6ES, BPR5ES, CR5HSB and BPR6HS types, and the Kawasaki twin takes a colder BPR4ES. Heat range and reach differ, so use the plug the manual names.
What is a normal spark plug gap on a small engine?
On these engines it runs from 0.024 to 0.032 inch (0.6 to 0.8 mm), and the Kohler and Kawasaki entries are 0.030 inch. Set it with a wire feeler gauge and bend only the side electrode. The figure for your engine is in its manual.
Why did my new spark plug need adjusting?
A plug is not always set to your engine’s gap when it leaves the box, and the gap can be knocked when it is handled. Checking with a feeler gauge takes a minute. An incorrect gap causes hard starting and a weak spark.
Which engine takes the least oil?
Of those listed, the Yamaha EF2200iS at 0.4 liter (12.8 ounces) and the Honda GCV160, whose refill after a drain is 12.0 to 13.5 ounces, are about the same. Small sumps are easy to overfill, so add oil a little at a time and check the dipstick.
Why does the Kawasaki oil capacity have two figures?
Because the engine has an oil filter. It takes about 1.8 liters (1.9 US quarts) when the filter is left on and 2.1 liters (2.2 quarts) when the filter is changed too, as the new filter has to fill.
What if my engine is not in the table?
Find its model on the engine label, then get the maker’s manual through the manufacturer support page. This table covers only engines whose manual has been read. Where your machine’s maker gives a different figure, follow the machine’s manual.
Can I use synthetic oil in these engines?
Several manuals allow it. Generac’s lists synthetic 5W-30, Champion’s lists 5W-30 full synthetic, and Kohler’s KOHLER PRO 10W-50 is a synthetic that extends its interval to 300 hours. A new engine’s break-in oil rules come first, so read your manual.
How often should I change oil on these engines?
The intervals in the manuals range from every 50 hours or 6 months on the Honda GCV and Westinghouse iGen4500 to every 100 hours or annually on the Champion, Kohler (ordinary oil) and Kawasaki, with an early first change on most. The model guide lists its service interval.
